IPL 2021: Daniel Vettori questions the ability of Shivam Dube as an all-rounder
Shivam Dube, an Indian fast-bowling all-rounder, is struggling to perform in the IPL. He has played in 12 T20 Internationals for India but has not lived up to his standards. In nine innings, he has only managed to score 105 runs and grab five wickets.
Shivam Dube’s success for Mumbai in the domestic circuit catapulted him into the spotlight and he was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore during the IPL 2019 auction for a price of five crores.
The all-rounder, however, failed to deliver the results that were required of him. In two seasons with RCB, he only managed to score 169 runs and take four wickets.
He was purchased by Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2021 auction to fill the void of a middle-order batter and a useful bowler, but he’s yet to impress, scoring 23(15), 2(7), and 17(20) in three matches.
Daniel Vettori unsure about Shivam Dube’s abilities
Former New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori has cast his doubts on Indian all-rounder Shivam Dube’s skills. Vettori said that his reputation as an all-rounder has caused people to demand a lot from him and has culminated in him being auctioned for a large sum of money. During an interactive session with ESPNCricinfo, Vettori said he thinks Dube’s batting and bowling skills are below par. Vettori went on to say that as a result of this, neither the Rajasthan Royals nor any of his previous teams were able to work out what position he could play.
“I think as soon as you are labelled an Indian all-rounder, you face high expectations and you generally gather a high auction price. He got a big price at the RCB, not so big at Rajasthan but my concern with Shivam Dube is that both facets of his game aren’t quite up to standards and there’s sort of mixing and matching to try and put him in certain situations where he can be successful. And I don’t think any team that has been involved with him has found that just yet. So, there’s a lot expected of him but I am not sure if he’s quite up to the task in either facet of his game,” said Daniel Vettori.
He also stated that he could be used as a pinch-hitter at no.7 in the death. Vettori also said that he could be used as a bowler in the same manner as Vijay Shankar, bowling just two or three overs at a time.
“It puts Rajasthan into a difficult position about when to utilize him and maybe the case that he comes as a lower-order hitter maybe at 7 and then they can try him as a Vijay Shankar style of bowler where he gives them a few more options,” added Vettori.
When his team was chasing a gigantic total of 189, Dube played a very shaky inning against Chennai Super Kings. RR’s management positioned him in at number 4 ahead of David Miller, but he struggled to find a groove before handing over his wicket to Ravindra Jadeja. He scored 17 runs in 20 deliveries, hitting just two boundaries.
