Danielle Collins has disclosed the details of her heated post-match discussion with Iga Swiatek at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The players played out a closely contested quarterfinal in the French capital, with Swiatek coming out on top in the end.
Swiatek was leading 6-2, 1-6, 4-1 when Collins picked up an injury. She took a medical timeout and even had a visit from a trainer before she retired from the contest. The American later disclosed that she had an abdominal muscle injury.
After the match, the two players were spotted in a not-so-friendly discussion, which caught everyone’s attention. In her post-match press conference, Collin revealed that she found Swiatek’s concerns about her injury insincere and asked her not to show fake emotions.
I told Iga she didn't have to be insincere about my injury. There's a lot that happens on camera, and there are a lot of people with a ton of charisma and come out and are one way on camera and another way in the locker room. I don't really feel like anybody needs to be insincere. They can be the way that they are. I can accept that, and I don't need the fakeness.Danielle Collins said
At the age of 30, Collins is playing in her final season on the WTA tour and her hopes of fighting her way to a medal at the Summer Games ended prematurely due to injury.
Danielle Collins gave Iga Swiatek a big scare in pairs, including a nasty body blow
Iga Swiatek did not have an easy time against Danielle Collins, as the eighth-seeded American gave he a run for her money. She fought hard to take the match to a decider and the result could have been different if not for the injury she picked up later.
After announcing her decision to retire at the end of the year, Collins has been playing some of the best tennis in her career. She won back-to-back titles at the Miami Open and Charleston Open, reached her first clay court Masters 1000 semifinal at the Italian Open, and made it to the second week at Wimbledon for the first time in her career.
At the age of 30, she continues to strike the ball as strongly as ever. This was also seen in the match against Swiatek when she gave the WTA World No. 1 an injury scare. In the first game of the third set, Collins hit a backhand down the middle of the court. Swiatek, who was near the net, could not get out of the way in time and her body took a nasty blow.
The Pole immediately dropped her racket and fell to the floor, prompting chair umpire Damien Dumusois and Collins to check on her. She eventually got up and finished the match without any further hiccups. She will next take on sixth seed Qinwen Zheng in the semifinals.
