Danielle Collins‘ run in Cincinnati Open ended early. On Friday (August 8), compatriot Taylor Townsend knocked her out with a 6-4, 7-6(2) scoreline.

During the second round, Collins broke down in tears and shouted, “Why is this happening to me?” to her team. After losing the match, she left the stadium without her bag, which Townsend later handed to Collins’ team.

Collins was at the receiving end of criticism after this incident. But she decided to give a befitting response by taking to her Instagram story and revealing the real reason behind her conduct.

Anyone who has a herniated disc knows my pain. It’s no surprise the keyboard warriors can’t understand or relate, as they’ve been too busy sitting on their a**es judging people who show up and try to give it their best even on days that suck. Thank you to everyone who has been praying for my injury, and thank you to Taylor Townsend for being the best of the best.

Collins was chasing her second WTA 1000 title of her career following her victory at the 2024 Miami Open. The 2022 Australian Open finalist has never progressed beyond the second round of her home tournament.

Collins last lifted a title at the 2024 Charleston Open by beating Daria Kasatkina, following which, she reached the final of the Strasbourg Open but couldn’t beat reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys. Since that match, Collins hasn’t yet played a final.

Townsend has now taken a 3-1 head-to-head lead over Collins. It was also their first meeting since their clash in the first round of the 2018 Indian Wells, where the 31-year-old registered her lone victory over the two-time Grand Slam doubles champion.

After Collins, Townsend faced 13th seed Liudmila Samsonova, whom she knocked out in straight sets. She will next be locking horns with Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, whom she met in Puerto Vallarta back in 2024, and lost that match. Before scheduling the match against the 29-year-old, Maneiro knocked out Canada’s Leylah Fernandez.

Taylor Townsend recalls lifting the Citi Open in front of her family and friends

Last month, Taylor Townsend secured a spot in the main draw of the Citi Open singles event after playing the qualifiers. But her campaign was ended by Leylah Fernandez in the quarterfinals.

In doubles, however, she and Zhang Shuai, the second seeds, reached the final and beat Caroline Dolehide and Sofia Kenin. During an interview with Tennis Channel in Cincinnati, Townsend recalled lifting the Citi Open in front of her loved ones.

It was phenomenal. It’s one of the things that I will cherish and hold for the rest of my life. Like, especially, you know, in DC, my best friend was able to be there. AJ (her son) was able to be on the court with me and, you know, do the trophy ceremony, and I was able to kind of talk to him, you know, in that moment. My friends, loved ones, people who I hadn’t seen in a lot of years. So it was a really special moment for me.

After their win, when the rankings were updated, Townsend and Shuai reached the top of the table. Townsend became a doubles No.1 for the first time in her career.

After Washington, the pair suffered a three-set defeat in the final of the Canadian Open to Coco Gauff and McCartney Kessler. In Cincinnati, they will start their campaign on Sunday (August 10) against Liudmila Samsonova and Nicole Melichar-Martinez.

Townsend has lifted 10 titles in doubles, which include this year’s Citi Open, Dubai Open, and the Australian Open. The latter two she captured along with Katerina Siniakova. In singles, the 29-year-old hasn’t yet tasted success.
