Danielle Collins has shared her opinion about the current political situation in her country, which has generated a lot of fans’ reactions. The former Australian Open finalist stood out from other American players, who avoided commenting on the political situation when asked during their press conference at the Australian Open.

Collins is not participating in the ongoing Australian Open as she chose to take a break from the courts while undergoing an egg freezing procedure, which will allow her bear children. The former World No.7 instead joined the Tennis Channel crew at the tournament, commenting and analyzing matches for the television network.

She has not featured in a tour-level event since losing to Jaqueline Cristian in straight sets in the first round of the US Open. The 32-year-old was supposed to retire after the 2024 season but changed her mind and decided to continue competing. However, following her break from the court, she’s yet to set a return date to tour.

Nonetheless, miles away from the Australian Open, there’s an ongoing political turbulence in the United States of America as Border Patrol agents continue to round up immigrants, who they claim came into the country illegally. Unfortunately, one of their raids ended up in a violent situation, leading to the death of an American citizen.

The incident has since caused social instability in Minneapolis under President Donald Trump’s administration. Players, including Coco Gauff, Taylor Fritz, and Madison Keys, have been asked about the political situation in America, but they have been cautious about expressing their opinions. But that’s not the same for Collins as she lashes out against the government:

The lack of empathy so many people have towards those who may have been dealt a different set of cards in life has been really sad to see. I don’t understand why bad things continue to happen to good people, or why children have to get taken from their parents or watch their parents disappear. The lack of compassion and empathy for humanity that we keep seeing in these horrific videos is beyond devastating.

Collins enjoyed a good 2024 campaign, which saw her win two titles, including a WTA 1000 title in Miami. But last year, she failed to match the same result on the court, with her best run coming at the Strasbourg Open, where she defeated Emma Raducanu en route to her semi-final exit at the WTA 500 event.

Coco Gauff gives her opinion on the current political climate in America

At the Australian Open, Coco Gauff expressed concerns about the current political situation in America. The United States of America has experienced a political shift since President Donald Trump was elected president for the second time. The Billionaire has enforced laws that have led to protests all over the country since January 2024.

During one of the press conferences at the Australian Open, Gauff revealed that her concerns are primarily on social equity, particularly in the Black communities and women’s rights. She added she can only donate to communities affected and speak against the ongoing crisis, but she’s not able to bring much change:

At this point, I feel a bit fatigued talking about it just because it is hard being a Black woman in this country and having to experience things, even online, and seeing marginalized communities being affected, and knowing that I can only donate and speak out. I try my best to do that. But I hope that as time continues, we can reach a state that we’re not currently in, and we keep moving forward.

Gauff crashed out of the Australian Open in the quarter-finals after losing to Elina Svitolina in straight sets. The American star gave her worst performances of the season, hitting 26 unforced errors and five double faults. She’s the tour-leading 431 double faults last season – 131 more than any other player.
