Danielle Collins thanked her friends for taking care of her while she was struggling with health problems. Collins has been dealing with multiple health issues, with endometriosis and fertility problems almost forcing her to quit tennis last year.

The 31-year-old was last seen in action at the US Open, where she suffered a first-round exit to Jaqueline Cristian. She also played mixed doubles in her home Grand Slam event along with compatriot Christian Harrison. In her recent Instagram post, Collins detailed her visit to a hospital due to severe back pain that kept her awake at night.

Guilty as charged: reflecting on most of my trips around the world seems like one big highlight reel after another, capturing some of life’s most unbelievably good moments. But that’s not always reality. It has been the absolute worst being a million miles away from home, feeling sick, my back just absolutely killing me, and being up all hours of the night. I don’t know what I would have done without my friends @isabeau_ruiter and @menno_de_groot if they weren’t there to help take care of me the last few days.

Collins was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic autoimmune disease that causes pain and stiffness in joints.

From taking me to the hospital, driving me all over to get in with the right doctor, making me food, bringing me tea, laying in the living room with me while watching just like that, going on little walks with me, and being so understanding when I’d tell them I need to lay flat again or go to the car to put the seat warmer on my back.

Collins underwent surgery in 2021 to remove a large ovarian cyst. She had said she would be retiring at the end of the 2024 season to start a family, but took a U-turn and chose to play this season. During an interview, Collins said tennis was a distraction from everything going on in her life, so she decided to continue playing.

Danielle Collins’ performance so far this season

Danielle Collins has a 15/14 win-loss record this season and hasn’t yet won a title. The former World No.7 also has not reached a final this season, with the last title being the 2024 Charleston Open, which she clinched by defeating Daria Kasatkina.

It was her back-to-back tournament win following the Miami Open, where the 2022 Australian Open finalist defeated Elena Rybakina to lift her career’s first Big Title. The last time she played a final was at the 2024 Strasbourg, losing the match to reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys.

This season, Collins produced her best performance when she reached the semifinal of the Strasbourg Open, losing that match to Liudmila Samsonova. Since then, Collins failed to win more than one of two matches in the next seven tournaments, including the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.

She, in fact, broke into tears and could be heard yelling, “Why is this happening to me?” to her team during her first-round exit at the Cincinnati Masters. Collins later took to Instagram to reveal that she was playing with a herniated disc and criticized those who judged her without knowing the real reason why she cried.

The North American hardcourt swing has ended, and next is the Asian swing. It’s uncertain whether Collins will be participating in the WTA 1000 China Open. Last year, she skipped the entire Asian swing and only played one tournament, the Guadalajara Open, following the US Open. The Guadalajara Open is underway, but the four-time WTA singles titlist is not playing.
