While Iga Swiatek will be competing for the Career Grand Slam at the Australian Open, Danielle Collins will be watching the tournament from the sidelines. After causing a lot of drama last year, she decided to withdraw from the event this season. Collins is covering the Melbourne Slam as a commentator for Tennis Channel.

When making predictions, Collins said Swiatek could suffer an early-round exit, saying she is concerned about the Pole because of her two back-to-back defeats at the United Cup. Swiatek was beaten for the fourth consecutive time by Coco Gauff during the Poland versus the USA semifinals. Later in the final, although Poland finally got hold of the trophy after heartbreaks in the previous two finals, Belinda Bencic clinched her career’s second victory in her seventh meeting against the six-time Grand Slam champion.

Frustrations got the better of the former World No.1, who flung her racket while walking toward her team. Swiatek, despite dismantling Australia’s Maya Joint in the quarterfinals, was spotted crying, raising concerns that something was hurting her.

I think it’s probably no surprise to people that follow tennis, but I’m going to go with Swiatek. I was a little bit concerned with her performance at United Cup, two back-to-back losses. So I think there’s a little bit of trouble in paradise for her right now.

Danielle Collins said

Those who follow tennis are very well aware of Collins’ past feud with Swiatek. The American was greatly disappointed after retiring mid-match from the 2024 Paris Olympics, accusing Swiatek of being ‘insincere’ and “fake” about her injury struggles during their tense customary handshake.

Swiatek, who is known for her reserved demeanor, defended herself, saying she was confused as to why Collins behaved in such a manner. But the 32-year-old doesn’t shy away from speaking what’s on her mind, and on multiple occasions, she has talked about her rivalry with Swiatek. Last year, after getting thrashed in the Wimbledon third round by the eventual winner, Collins bluntly said everyone is not “destined to get along well with each other“.

During the aforementioned show on Tennis Channel, Collins said she doesn’t think anyone in the top 10 on the men’s side would lose in the early rounds of the Australian Open. Collins withdrew from the first Major of the season to recover from her back injury, and she also underwent egg freezing procedures.

CoCo Vandeweghe is concerned about Iga Swiatek’s mental state

Iga Swiatek breaking down in tears mid-match or after the match has become pretty frequent. The fact that this happened so early in the season has concerned former World No.9 CoCo Vandeweghe, who is also worried about whether there is something outside of tennis that is troubling the four-time Roland Garros champion.

Iga crying early in the season, getting bageled a set from Bencic, and the fourth consecutive straight set loss to Coco. To me, coming into January, you’re supposed to be refreshed, regenerated, and you’re already mentally frazzled. I hope nothing terrible is going on off the scenes that we don’t know about, but I think for anyone looking from the outside in, this is worrisome.

CoCo Vandeweghe told Tennis Channel

At the Australian Open, Swiatek has yet to reach the final. She is a two-time semifinalist, reaching the stage in 2022 and 2025. Last year, eventual champion Madison Keys ended her run in three sets.

Swiatek struggled a great deal earlier in the 2025 season and lifted a title not before Wimbledon, where she double-bageled Amanda Anisimova. She finished the season with three titles from four finals, as apart from the grass-court Major, she took home the Cincinnati Open and the Korea Open.
