In Short
  • Daniil Medvedev's baggage was lost after his flight from Palm Springs to Miami, impacting his preparation for the Miami Open.
  • United Airlines acknowledged Medvedev's plea for help on social media but provided a generic response.
  • The incident adds to a chaotic start for the Miami Open, which has seen several high-profile player withdrawals.

The turnaround between the first and second legs of tennis’s famous “Sunshine Double” is notoriously brutal. Players have just days to recover from the dry, heavy desert air of Indian Wells, pack their bags, and fly across the country to deal with the sweltering, humid conditions of the Miami Open. It is a logistical nightmare even when everything goes perfectly.

But for World No. 10 Daniil Medvedev, the transition just hit a massive, unexpected roadblock. His baggage wasn’t with him when he reached Miami. Taking to X, Medvedev fired off a polite but clearly desperate plea to the airline.

Hi @united…need a little help. Flew from PSP to Florida yesterday and none of my bags arrived. Kind of need them to play in the @MiamiOpen….can you help?

United Airlines, to their credit, did respond to Medvedev’s plea. The response was shared in reply to the Russian’s tweet.

Hi there, Daniil. Thank you for reaching out. We are sorry to hear about your delayed baggage. We absolutely understand how important it is to have your belongings as quickly as possible. Please DM your delayed bag file reference number so that we can check for update.

Taking sarcasm to a whole new level, Medvedev classified United Airlines’ help as ‘AI (Artificial Intelligence)’. In other words, he said that the responses are generic:

The amount of AI help has been overwhelming.

Fresh off a grueling run to the Indian Wells final, where he ultimately fell to Italian sensation Jannik Sinner, Medvedev hopped on a United Airlines flight from Palm Springs, California, to Florida. He was ready to regroup, hit the practice courts, and prepare for his opening-round match. However, the problems arose when he arrived at the carousel in Florida.

Daniil Medvedev’s equipment dilemma

For a casual traveler, a lost suitcase means a frustrating trip to a local department store for some overpriced t-shirts and a toothbrush. For an elite professional tennis player like Daniil Medvedev, it is a full-blown crisis.

A pro’s tennis bag isn’t just carrying a few spare shirts. It houses highly customized rackets weighted to the exact gram, specific string tensions tailored to the player’s unique specifications, and custom-molded shoes designed to withstand the brutal, sliding stops on hard courts. One cannot simply walk into a local sporting goods store and pull Daniil Medvedev‘s gear off the rack.

Without his rackets, shoes, and match apparel, the Russian star was essentially left stranded just days before his Round of 64 match. Faced with the reality of a looming tournament and no equipment, Medvedev did what anyone else in 2024 does when an airline loses their bags: he took his grievances to social media.

The Miami Open’s chaotic start

This luggage saga is just the latest bizarre storyline in what has already been a rocky start for the Miami Open. The tournament has been hit with a wave of high-profile withdrawals, stripping the draw of some serious star power before the first ball was even tossed. Novak Djokovic opted out to manage his schedule, while Emma Raducanu withdrew amid lingering injury concerns.

With the draw opening up, Medvedev is heavily favored to make a deep run, provided he actually has a racket to swing. The Russian is defending finalist points from Indian Wells and usually thrives on the North American hard courts.

However, this isn’t his first travel nightmare of the season. Earlier in the year, he found himself temporarily stranded in Dubai due to regional flight disruptions, adding unnecessary fatigue to an already packed ATP Masters 1000 schedule.

As the clock ticks down toward his Friday match, the pressure is entirely on the baggage handlers. If the bags don’t arrive, Medvedev’s sponsors will have to pull off a logistical miracle, overnighting freshly customized rackets, strings, and custom-fit shoes to his hotel in South Florida.
