Daniil Medvedev has revealed that his best chances of winning his second career Grand Slam title will be at the US Open 2025, which kicks off on August 24. The former World No.1 has struggled in major tournaments this season, winning just one of his four matches and that has seen him drop out of the top 10.
Currently ranked World No.13, the Russian star won just his first round match at the 2025 Australian Open in January before losing to Learner Tien in the next round. He was fined more than $62,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct after destroying a net camera with his racket during his opening match win.
At the French Open and Wimbledon, he suffered early defeats, losing to Cameron Norrie and Benjamin Bonzi, respectively. Since the start of the North American hard-court swing, he has struggled on the court, managing to reach the quarter-finals of a tournament just once and that came at the Washington Open in July.
However, Medvedev’s career has been short of Grand Slam titles, but he has been to the final of Grand Slams on six occasions in his career. His only victory came at the 2021 US Open, where he defeated Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. The last time he reached a major final was at the 2024 Australian Open, where he lost to World No.1 Jannik Sinner.
In his interview with Tecnifibre, he was asked which Grand Slam tournament he likes the most. The 29-year-old revealed that he loves playing at the US Open and that the tournament is his best chance of winning another Grand Slam in his career:
To be honest, I love playing the US Open. There are tournaments where you come back and think, ‘Okay, one more year. I respect every tournament, but I always come to New York with joy, I really like it there and I always want to win there. This is the only Grand Slam tournament I’ve won, so I really want to win another one here. I think this is my best chance because my strengths are best suited to this surface.
Medvedev reached his first Grand Slam final at the 2019 US Open, but it took him two years to win his first title at the sport’s biggest stage. But he got to his fourth major final at the 2021 Australian Open, where he lost to Novak Djokovic in 7-5, 6-2, 6-2. The following year, he reached the final again but lost to Rafael Nadal in a five-set thriller.
Daniil Medvedev reflects on the crowd booing him at the 2019 US Open
Daniil Medvedev was just 23 when he made it to the final of the 2019 US Open, his first major tournament final of his career. He faced Rafael Nadal in the championship match and battled hard to keep his hopes alive after losing the first two sets. He won the next two sets to force the match to a fifth set.

Before the clash, he had been booed in two consecutive matches, and that continued in the match against Nadal as well. The fans in the stands backed Nadal for an easy win, but the Russian star was making it difficult for the Spaniard. More recently, He reflected on the incident with the crowd during the aforementioned interview, emphasizing it was a crazy atmosphere:
In 2019, there was an unpleasant situation with American fans – I was booed three games in a row. It was crazy because it was the only time in my life that more than 10,000 people booed me. All because the cameraman decided to heat up the atmosphere and put a moment on the big screen that no one saw. I then, let’s say, showed the middle finger.
Medvedev lost the fifth set to Nadal, ending the match in 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, 4-6. He lost to Nadal in the 2022 Australian Open in five sets also. He holds a 1-5 head-to-head record against the Spaniard and his only victory over Nadal came at the 2020 ATP Finals.
