World No. 4 Daniil Medvedev has reached the quarterfinals of the Mutua Madrid Open. Except for the Monte Carlo Masters two weeks ago, the Russian has reached the quarterfinals of all the tournaments in which he has competed. However, at the Madrid Open, he is looking forward to facing the record title winner of the tournament.
The 28-year-old has been enjoying the Madrid Open after the Monte Carlo third-round exit. He produced another fine performance to defeat Alexander Bublik 7-6(3), 6-4 in an hour and 44 minutes.
Meanwhile, he is yet to know his opponent, as he has to wait to see who wins between Rafael Nadal and Czech star Jiri Lehecka in their Round of 16 match.
During Medvedev’s on-court interview, after his victory, he expressed how he is looking forward to playing either Nadal or Lecheka in the quarterfinals. The 28-year-old said he is super interested in seeing their match and is ready for the winner.
I watched Rafa yesterday. I watched the third set. I heard he didn’t play so good in the 2nd. Third set was pretty big in my opinion. He played well and wasn’t looking very tired. Pedro was. Interesting to see how it is today. I played Jiri in practice here before the tournament. He was playing some big tennis. Super interested to see how it goes and to see if Rafa is better or tired. Let’s see. I’ll get ready for the winner.Daniil Medvedev said via post match interview
Nadal is the favorite to beat Lecheka later today and has been playing one of his best tennis this year. He beat Pedro Cachin yesterday despite losing one set but will be facing a very young and vibrant 22-year-old Lecheka, whom he has never played against.
Daniil Medvedev achieves prestigious milestone after victory over Alexander Bublik
Daniil Medvedev’s victory against Alexander Bublik meant the Russian has become the 10th ATP player to reach the quarterfinals of all nine Masters 1000 events. He made his first last-eight Masters appearances after defeating Bublik at the 2019 Monte Carlo.
The Russian has been one of the most consistent players on the Tour. Despite not having a title this season, he has always come pretty close to winning. With that being said, the tennis professional will be hoping he can earn his first crown of the season at the Madrid Open.
