Will Daniil Medvedev become a coach after retirement? He did not rule out the possibility of it when he was asked whether he would do the coaching duties 15 or 20 years from now.

Medvedev is in Beijing for the China Open and went past former World No.6 Gael Monfils in the first round with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-4. Before arriving in China’s capital, Medvedev was in Berlin for the Laver Cup. He represented Team Europe, who won the tournament for the first time since 2021. Apart from playing, Medvedev was also involved in giving advice to his teammates about which he was asked during the press conference at the China Open.

I think I could do it. It depends if I want to do it, what will I be doing in my life after my tennis career. It depends on a lot of things. I think it’s very possible.

Medvedev then added that in a tournament like the Laver Cup where there’s a team environment, everyone helps each other out. The Russian admitted that sometimes, he turns shy while giving his opinions, especially when it comes to the top players who know what they have to do.

Daniil Medvedev was happy that his advice worked

Daniil Medvedev was the only Team Europe player who did not win his matches. He lost his first match in three sets against Team World’s Frances Tiafoe, then went on to lose to Ben Shelton in three sets on the final day of the tournament. Medvedev, in the China Open press conference, stated that as he failed to win a single match, he was happy his advice to Alexander Zverev worked which is why he may consider becoming a coach in the future.

When Sascha was playing, I saw some things where I was like, ‘Okay, I have to try to give him this advice.’ It worked. I was really happy. I also lost both of my matches. I was the only one not to give a point to the team. I was like, ‘Okay, if I give this advice, it works, I will do something good for the team.’ It was a funny feeling.

The 28-year-old is next set to lock horns with Adrian Mannarino. They have met seven times on the ATP Tour and the Frenchman leads their head-to-head encounter 4-3. The Russian last met Mannarino in the Round of 64 of the 2023 Wimbledon and won that match.
