Communication between players and coaches was generally banned on the ATP and WTA Tours until recently. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has stated that it will allow off-court coaching on both tours from January 2025.

The ITF revealed that the decision to allow off-court coaching is fairer and potentially more entertaining for the sport. From 2025, coaches can issue advice either verbally or through hand signals during the playing of a point. Also, players can access player analysis technology when coaching is permitted.

Nonetheless, coaching during matches has been controversial in the past. Some players have accused their opponent’s coach of illegally communicating, which has led to a serious outburst on the court.

Whether the rule will be effectively implemented is yet to be known, but players like Taylor Fritz and Denis Shapovalov have spoken against it. Former World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev believes that the rule will make not make any impact during matches.

I don’t know. I don’t think it can make a huge difference. It can make some difference, and I’m okay with it. Like, you know, if some coach tells to my opponent, serve to his forehand more now, whatever, it’s a tennis game. It’s okay. He could have thought about it himself. If it’s his coach who tells him, I don’t care. For me, it’s not a problem.

The defeat was the Russian’s maiden loss to Popyrin in his career after winning their three previous meetings. During his star post-match conference, Medvedev opined that the multiple balls used at ATP events as the reason for his loss.

As I say, some players will like this ball, so I get it. I’m crying because it disadvantages me. But if you take six balls out of the new balls out of the can, if you look closely and you bounce them, there are going to be six different balls. I don’t think that’s how it’s supposed to be.
