Daniil Medvedev is inarguably one of the form players on the ATP tour this year. The Russian started off the year by making the finals of the Australian Open in February. Thereafter, consistent results have seen him climb up to the No.2 spot in the ATP rankings.

Medvedev replaced Rafael Nadal at no.2 in the rankings and is only 2000 points behind the no.1 player, Novak Djokovic. If he has a decent outing at the ongoing ATP Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo, he is likely to reduce the gap further.

However, for the Russian, clay is the least preferred surface. He is yet to win a title on this surface.

Speaking to the reporters before the event, Medvedev expressed his displeasure of playing on the dirt, “Honestly, there’s nothing I like on clay. There’s always bad bounces, you’re dirty after playing.”

Incidentally, Medvedev lives in Monte Carlo and has even made the semis at this event two years ago. Further explain his dislike for the surface, the 25-year-old said, “Mentally for me the most important is to know that some shots that maybe would be winners or I would win the point on hard courts it’s definitely not the case on clay courts.”

Given he is one of the top seeds, he has been given a bye in the first round and will face the winner of the match between Serbian Filip Krajinovic and Nikoloz Basilashvili.
