Daniil Medvedev is set to kick-start his campaign at the Rotterdam Open and ahead of the tournament, he announced that he is no longer working with Gilles Simon. Under the Frenchman, Medvedev didn’t win any title last year and also suffered a shocking second-round exit at the 2025 Australian Open.

Though Simon is no longer a part of Medvedev’s team, Gilles Cervara will continue to coach him. Cervara joined Medvedev’s entourage in 2017 and under him, the tennis ace lifted his maiden Grand Slam title at the 2021 US Open and also reached the top of the ATP rankings.

With Gilles, we decided to stop working together. Honestly, it was a very good experience, with a lot of good things. But now, Gilles Cervara and I can move forward to work together. With Simon, it didn’t go exactly as we wanted, especially in terms of results. We didn’t win any titles, Grand Slams, or anything like that, but I learned a lot of new things about tennis: I’m sure it will help me in the future.

Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, hasn’t lifted the title since May 2023. The 28-year-old then, in 2024, not only was trophy-less but ended his season with a 46-21 win-loss record.

After crashing out of last year’s ATP Finals, Medvedev carried the poor form to the Australian Open as he was on the brink of a defeat against an unseeded Kasidit Samrej from Thailand in the first round. Though Medvedev somehow won that match, 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals runner-up, Learner Tien, with a five-set victory, knocked out the three-time Australian Open finalist.

Daniil Medvedev to lock horns with Stan Wawrinka at Rotterdam Open

After a disappointing campaign at Melbourne Park, Daniil Medvedev has set his eyes on the Rotterdam Open. The World No.7 is the second seed in the event as several top players, including World No.1 Jannik Sinner and World No.6 Novak Djokovic aren’t playing.

Medvedev will kick start his campaign in Rotterdam with a first-round match against an unseeded Stan Wawrinka. The Swiss veteran has met Medvedev four times and is 2-2 in their head-to-head meetings.

Medvedev had won their matches at 2017 Wimbledon and 2019 US Open. It was, however, the three-time Grand Slam champion who emerged as winner in their last two clashes, at the 2020 Australian Open and the 2022 Moselle Open.

The 39-year-old started his season at the Australian Open and was defeated in the first round by Lorenzo Sonego. Following the season’s first Major, Arthur Cazaux eliminated him from the Open Occitanie.
