Even those playing during the evening session are not getting relief from the extreme conditions in Shanghai. Daniil Medvedev, right after his win over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3, 7-6(5), sat on his chair and looked completely exhausted.
Medvedev is into the fourth round of the Shanghai Masters and is scheduled to lock horns with Learner Tien, who was the reason behind his end-of-campaign at the Australian Open. The upcoming match will be their third encounter on the tour. Before Shanghai, they met in the semifinal of the China Open, where the Russian ended up giving the walkover.
This is not the first time that heat has caused problems for Medvedev this year. At the Cincinnati Masters, where players had to toil in scorching heat, Medvedev, during his second-round match against Adam Walton, put his head inside a refrigerator to cool himself.

I suffer many tournaments here everyone suffers, so it puts me a little bit in the same condition as everyone.
Daniil Medvedev said during his on-court interview
The scorching conditions led to the withdrawals of several players, including defending champion Jannik Sinner. Novak Djokovic, the tournament’s most successful player with four titles, vomited mid-match during his three-set win over Yannick Hanfmann in the third round.
"I suffer at many tournaments, but here everyone suffers .. I'm happy about it." 🥵

Later, he declared that the condition in Shanghai is “brutal” this year. After his opening-round win, he said he could not recall the last time he played in China with “insane” humidity like this year.
Jimmy Arias wants players to be creative and challenge Daniil Medvedev
Former American tennis ace Jimmy Arias thinks players have started to focus only on themselves, which he hates. What he liked the most was the “chess” part of the game, where opponents tried to figure out ways to trick each other and find ways to get to each other’s weaknesses. He cited Daniil Medvedev‘s example to explain his point.

If you served and volleyed against him, you’re on the fence. You could hit a slow serve wide and get inches from the net. If he was playing Stefan Edberg, he would have had time to run on his side, slap him a high five, and come back, because he would have gotten in so tight to the net that all you have to do is touch the volley, get your strings on it. From the position he’s hitting the return, you will win that point almost every time if you get your strings on the volley.
Jimmy Arias told Monday Match Analysis
The 61-year-old Arias is a former World No.5 and clinched five titles. He never won a Major, with his best performance in those tournaments being his quarterfinal appearance at the 1984 French Open.
No player was doing it, and it was absolutely insane; I couldn’t handle it. You’re going to lose playing your game. The numbers tell you you’re going to lose that match on a hard court; he was beating everybody. So you’re going to lose playing your game, so why are you playing your game? Do something he doesn’t like!
Jimmy Arias added
Medvedev is chasing his first title of the season in Shanghai. So far this year, he has reached only the Halle Open final, losing the match to Alexander Bublik. The last time he won a title was at the 2023 Italian Open.
If Medvedev reaches the quarterfinals, he will face Nuno Borges or Alex de Minaur. In the semifinals, Medvedev is projected to meet Arthur Rinderknech, Jiri Lehecka, Felix Auger-Aliassime, or Lorenzo Musetti. The former World No.1 is a one-time Shanghai Masters champion, winning the title in 2019 by beating Alexander Zverev. Last year, his campaign ended in the quarterfinals.
