In Short
  • Daniil Medvedev criticized the quality of Head balls after his quarter-finals win at Indian Wells.
  • He expressed satisfaction with the Dunlop balls used at the tournament, stating they maintain their shape better.
  • Medvedev will face Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals, aiming to end Alcaraz's 16-match unbeaten streak.

Daniil Medvedev has reignited the Head Ball feud after his quarter-final win over Jack Draper. The Russian star ended defending champion Draper’s hopes of winning the Indian Wells Masters for the second time in his career.

Medvedev now has 17 match wins, the highest for any player in the men’s circuit. He began his feud with Head Balls back in February, when he played at the Rotterdam Open.

The former World No.1 was so angry with the quality of the ball that he yelled at officials during his loss against Ugo Humbert in the first round of the event. Other players, including Alex de Minaur and Arthur Fils also raised the same concern about the ball.

Ahead of the Indian Wells Masters, Taylor Fritz was the first to point out that the Dunlop Balls would be used at the event. The American star stated that the balls were fluffy and would be difficult to handle on the hard court in the California desert, which is known to be slow. Surprisingly, no player has raised such concerns since the start of the tournament.

Nonetheless, Medvedev criticized the way chair umpires at the Indian Wells handled the shot clock 25-second rule. He was angry with the way umpire Fergus Murphy kept issuing him time violation warnings during his fourth-round win over Alex Michelsen. He also suggested that the umpire is known for being less considerate about what players go through on the court.

After beating Draper in straight sets, Medvedev reignited his feud with Head balls. The former finalist declared that the Dunlop Balls used in Indian Wells were completely better than the Head balls used at the Rotterdam Open last month.

If I understand correctly, Penn belongs to Head and I hate Head brand balls. I made that very clear at Rotterdam: after hitting those balls for two minutes, they’re no longer round. The Dunlop balls (used at Indian Wells) aren’t my favorites but at least they’re round.

Medvedev is known to be vocal about issues that bother him. Sometimes, it has come to light that the issues he raises are legitimate and need to be dealt with seriously. At Rotterdam, De Minaur and Fils backed his claim, but the brand didn’t put out any statement about the complaints.

Daniil Medvedev proud of his performance against Jack Draper in Indian Wells

Daniil Medvedev cruised past defending champion Jack Draper in the quarter-finals of the Indian Wells. The 11th seed is into the semi-finals for the fourth consecutive year at the tournament. He’s currently on an eight-match winning streak and got the better of Draper 6-1, 7-5. He has now won 16 sets in a row since losing to his close rival Stefanos Tsitsipas at the ATP 500 tournament in Doha.

Medvedev needed just 24 minutes to claim the first set as Draper appeared to be struggling physically. The British No.1 was still feeling the effects of his thrilling two-hour and 35-minute win over Novak Djokovic in the fourth round. Medvedev revealed after the win that he’s so happy with his performance against Draper, particularly in the first round:

The first set was unreal, I couldn’t miss a ball. It was an unbelievable level. Second set, he tried to give everything he had, and he had an opportunity. I had one at 4-all, I should’ve done much better, but it happens. In general, I’m super happy with the way I’m playing now and I’m looking forward.

Medvedev will now face Carlos Alcaraz for a place in the final of the Indian Wells Masters. He holds an underwhelming 2-6 record against Alcaraz on court, but the two last met at the 2024 China Open. Medvedev is currently in his best form since 2022 and has already won two titles this year. He will be aiming to end Alcaraz’s 16-match unbeaten run on tour this season.
