The 2024 Cincinnati Masters is turning out to be an interesting tournament with the top seeds being pushed to the brink and eventually losing their calm. After Taylor Fritz‘s long and heated argument with the chair umpire in his first-round clash, Daniil Medvedev got into a similar argument on Wednesday (August 14).
The Russian tennis ace was unhappy with the chair umpire’s decision to hand him a code violation during his second-round match against Jiri Lehecka. Medvedev protested against the decision claiming he was talking to himself but the chair umpire was in no mood to change her decision.
After losing the first set in a tiebreak, Medvedev was frustrated and was heard shouting something in French. The chair umpire, in response, handed him a code violation.
Why are you giving me a code violation? I'm talking to myself. What's the problem? In the other match, when I was talking to myself, you didn't do anything. I'm speaking to myself.. what's the problem?Daniil Medvedev was heard telling the chair umpire
Despite his claims that he was talking to himself, Aurelie Tourte stood by her decision, saying that she understood what the Russian said.
Going gets tough for Daniil Medvedev ahead of 2024 US Open
Apart from these small clashes with the chair umpire, Daniil Medvedev is also having troubles with his game on the court. The World No. 5 was knocked out of the ATP 1000 tournament on Wednesday after losing 7-6(2), 6-4 to Jiri Lehecka. This was Medvedev’s second consecutive early exit as he met a similar fate in Montreal.

He was defeated by Alejandro Davidovic Fokina in the second round of the Canadian Open. Medvedev came into the Cincinnati Open with high hopes, considering his record at the hard court tournament. But he met an upbeat Lehecka who was coming back after a prolonged break.
The Czech player hit 17 forehand winners to take advantage of his opportunities while Medvedev made too many errors. The former World No. 1 could only get 44 percent of his first serves right while he hit seven double faults, including a critical one when facing break point at 3-3 in the second set.
Now, with the 2024 US Open due to start in a few days, Medvedev will be worried about his form. The 2021 champion has not won a title since 2023. Although he has made a few finals this season including the one at Australian Open earlier this year, Medvedev has not been able to cross the final hurdle.
