The clay season has just begun, and Daniil Medvedev is already struggling with his dislike for the surface. The 2024 Monte Carlo Masters added another chapter to his frustrations with the surface.
During his second-round match against Gael Monfils, the Russian had an epic meltdown owing to a controversial call by the chair umpire. The third round was no different. Up against compatriot Karen Khachanov, the absence of Hawkeye technology infuriated the former World No. 1 yet again.
He went on to call for a replacement for the umpire while also claiming he doesn’t need glasses because he’s not seeing anything. Having lost the first set, the fourth seed was almost on the verge of losing the second as well, when another call from the umpire went his way.
At 5-5, with Khachanov on break point at 40-30, the controversial call saw Medvedev concede the game. This meant the World No. 17 could serve the match out. Frustrated with the call and in a fit of rage, Medvedev threw his racket on the backboard with all his might before moving to his bench.
Khachanov was clinical and served out the match to win it 6-3, 7-5. It was his first win against the Russian No. 1 since 2018 and after five consecutive losses. He reaches the quarter-finals in Monte Carlo for the first time while also recording his maiden Top-10 win since the Madrid Masters last year.
Fans get furious at Daniil Medvedev for another tantrum and racket throw
Medvedev’s racket throw quickly went viral on social media. The incident had tennis fans divided over the reaction. With the inconsistency in line calls, many called for Hawkeye to be implemented during the clay season as well. They extended their sympathy towards the Russian for the incorrect calls.
But others argued that despite the absence of the particular technology, this type of behavior can’t be seen. As young kids idolize the top-ranked players, the former US Open champ needs to act more responsibly and be punished for actions like this. Many others, however, felt it was a case for clear default.
Medvedev is likely to skip next week’s events and play directly at the 2024 Madrid Masters. As for Khachanov, he will now take on two-time Monte Carlo winner Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Greek made things difficult for himself, but eventually managed to beat Alexander Zverev and reach the last-8.
