Three-time finalist Daniil Medvedev registered his first loss of the season in the fourth round of the 2026 Australian Open, where he fell in straight sets to Learner Tien. The Russian was on an eight-match win streak prior to this meet.
However, he was completely outplayed by Tien, who even handed him the first bagel of his Grand Slam career. Tien was clinical from beginning to the end, defeating Medvedev 6-4, 6-0, 6-1. The American was broken only once which happened in the last set. After the match, Medvedev shared his feelings about the loss during the press conference:
Learner played just too well today. Could I have done better? I mean, you can always do better when you’re losing, especially looking at the scoreboard, but I don’t know, I felt like he had the game of his life. He played so well, super aggressive, always making a better shot than me. I didn’t find many solutions on the court, which is strange; I haven’t felt like that many times in my life. He had an incredible game; everything he shot went in. I’m sure he would have done the same with his eyes closed.
Tien hit 33 winners and made 16 unforced errors compared to Medvedev, who had 15 winners and 30 unforced errors. The 29-year-old also made 6 double faults compared to Tien’s 1. Despite the exit, Medvedev has improved quite a lot from his previous year’s run at the Majors.
He had a 1-4 win/loss record at Grand Slams last year and now he is at 3-1. Medvedev is next scheduled to play at the ATP 500 tournament in Rotterdam, where he clinched the title in 2023.
