Daniil Medvedev advanced to the quarter-finals of the Citi Open after getting past Chinese qualifier Wu Yibing. The former World No.1 was into his eighth last eight of the season, only Carlos Alcaraz reached more quarter-finals (10) than the Russian star. After the win, he bragged that he could beat any player on tour when at his best.

Medvedev hasn’t been the same player he once was, after he won the 2021 US Open by beating Novak Djokovic in the final. The Russian star has struggled on the court in recent years and has not won a single title since lifting the Italian Open in May 2023. But, he has managed to reach a final this season, which was at the Terra Wortmann Open.

However, Medvedev hasn’t been short of reaching the quarter-final stage of tournaments this season. In Washington, he continued in the same fashion, playing some of his best tennis against Yibing. He fired 11 aces and won 83 percent of his first serve as he dominated the tie against the Chinese star.

He went on to claim a 6-3, 6-2 win and extend his head-to-head record 2-0 over Yibing on tour. Meanwhile, the 29-year-old competed at the event as World No.14, his lowest ranking since May 2019. He has struggled to maintain his place in the men’s top 10 since dropping out in March 2025.

During his press conference at the Citi Open, he revealed that if he plays his best tennis, he could beat the likes of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. He added that he’s optimistic about the court in Washington and he’s finally finding his game rhythm, which he failed in the very next match against Corentin Moutet.

I know that when I play well, I can beat anyone, literally anyone. Maybe against Carlos and Yannick, the odds will be in their favor, but I can still beat them. I’ve beaten every other player many times. I know that when I get back to this level, I can beat anyone. That’s where my optimism comes from, and I’m working hard to find my rhythm. Then the results and rankings will come naturally.

Medvedev currently holds a 7-8 head-to-head record against Sinner and has not beaten the Italian star in their past three meetings. The last time he defeated the World No.1 was at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. Also, he holds a 2-6 head-to-head record against Alcaraz and has lost their last four meetings on tour.

Daniil Medvedev says first-round loss at Wimbledon bothered him

Daniil Medvedev has been very poor by his standards in Grand Slam tournaments this season. The former World No.1 has only one win to his name in major events this year. He suffered a first-round defeat at the French Open against Cameron Norrie and faced the same fate at the Wimbledon Championships against Benjamin Bonzi.

Reflecting on his loss at the All England Club, he revealed that losing 6(2)-7, 6-3, 6(3)-7, 2-6 to Bonzi was a setback. He added that despite being bothered about the loss, he felt he didn’t play badly against the French star:

It does bother me. Like after Wimbledon, I was sitting there, and I actually felt like I didn’t play that bad. And you’re losing (in the) first round. You know that the guy is probably going to lose in the second or third round — he did lose in the second round. You’re like, ‘Damn, I didn’t play that bad and I’m losing first round of a Grand Slam, second time in a row.’

The last time Medvedev had lost in the first round of a Grand Slam (before Wimbledon and French Open this year) was in 2017. The Russian star has been in three finals at the Australian Open, two semi-finals at the Wimbledon Championships, and has reached the quarter-finals of the French Open on clay, his least favorite surface.
