A clip of Daniil Medvedev having a bizarre exchange with his wife during his quarter-finals match at the Italian Open has surfaced online. The Russian star struggled to beat Spanish sensation Martin Landaluce in their meeting in Rome, but had to dig deep to claim the victory eventually.

Medvedev lost the first set shockingly against Landaluce but reacted quickly in the second set to force a decider. However, in the third set, he seemed to lose his momentum to the Spaniard as he was trailing by a break and was furious when he failed to convert three match points.

Struggling to gain a foothold in the third set of the match, Medvedev had an exchange with his wife Daria Medvedeva, who was trying to motivate him uniquely. But the 30-year-old was not really happy with his game as he complained to her that her advice had failed to work on the court. This is a breakdown of how the exchange went:

Daria: Come on, focus.

Medvedev: It’s not working.

Daria: Adjust your toss.

Medvedev: Why isn’t it working? I’m trying to toss it but keep missing it.

Daria: Toss it above yourself. Let’s take it point by point. Fight for every ball, C’mon. Keep fighting.

However, the heated conversation between Medvedev and Daria paid off in the end as Medvedev fought his way to victory. Medvedev dug in for a dramatic win, eventually crossing the line in his fourth attempt to break Landaluce after two hours and 22 minutes. Medvedev won the match 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 to claim his place in the semi-finals.

Medvedev and Daria Medvedeva first met in 2014. They got married four years later and have two children together. The former US Open winner considers his wife to be one of the most important members of his team. She’s a former junior tennis player who has turned to journalism and often travels with her husband during tournaments to cheer him on.

Daniil Medvedev praises Martin Landaluce after their tie at the Italian Open

Daniil Medvedev is seeking to win his second Italian Open and first since 2023. He’s not known to play his best tennis on clay, but can spring some surprises on the surface. This is his first quarterfinal appearance on a surface this season, having reached the round of 16 at the Madrid Open and crashed out early in Monte Carlo.

To get to the semi-finals of the Italian Open, he has defeated Pablo Llamas Ruiz, Thiago Agustin Tirante, and Martin Landaluce. After his win against Landaluce, he took time to praise the 20-year-old for his confidence and performance against him, while tipping him to climb into the top 5 should he maintain his level of performance:

He played unreal at the beginning. If he plays like he did in the first set of every match, he will be Top 5 by the end of the year, in Turin… When you’re young, it’s tough to play a full match like this, so I just fought. I’m happy that I managed to seal the victory.

Landaluce has been one of the youngsters to watch out for in his generation. He played at last year’s Next Gen ATP Championship and reached his first ATP Masters 1000 quarter-finals at the Miami Open before losing to Jiri Lehecka.
