Daniil Medvedev‘s dream of lifting his second Grand Slam title was once again crushed, by none other than Carlos Alcaraz. On the Centre Court on Friday, Medvedev won the first set but a dominating Alcaraz did not let the Russian enjoy his lead as the wins in the next three sets secured Alcaraz a back-to-back final berth in Wimbledon.
The fifth seed Medvedev lost the match with a scoreline of 6-7(1-7), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. He now wants to work on himself before the Olympics, but he is not confident of winning the gold medal in singles after his elimination from Wimbledon.
I have no idea how I'm going to handle it (at the Olympics) if I'm going to be at peace or angry. I have my goals in my mind -- doubles, mixed doubles are big goals because and honestly speaking, I don't think I'm the favorite to get a medal in singles.Daniil Medvedev said at the press conference
The tennis matches at the Olympics will start from July 27. He will be coming to Paris to play as a neutral athlete without representing Russia due to the country’s ongoing war with Ukraine.
Daniil Medvedev calls Carlos Alcaraz the toughest player
Before his Wimbledon elimination, Daniil Medvedev knocked out Jannik Sinner, who was a heavy favorite as he arrived at the SW19 after lifting the Halle Open title. Medvedev crushed that dream by securing a hard-fought battle against him in five sets.
He was expected to pull off an incredible result against Carlos Alcaraz as well, but that did not happen as a resilient Alcaraz came out on top after being a set down. Medvedev had nothing but praise for the 21-year-old Spaniard’s game.
Probably in my career, he's the toughest opponent I have faced. But I have time, I have time to try to do better. The match against Carlos was much closer than last year.Daniil Medvedev said at the press conference
Alcaraz will lock horns with World No.2 Novak Djokovic in the final on Sunday. A win means he would be 4-0 in the Grand Slam finals.
Djokovic, on the other hand, is aiming for his first title of the season as well as his eighth Wimbledon and a historic 25th Grand Slam title! The Serb beat Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti in the semifinal to set up the clash with Alcaraz.
