After a strong run to the semi-finals in Indian Wells, Daniil Medvedev had a disappointing exit in Miami. He lost in the second round to Jaume Munar with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat.

During the match, Medvedev complained about the quality of the tennis balls. He spoke to the supervisor about the issue between sets. This is not the first time he has voiced his frustration to officials.

Who allowed these balls to be used in a professional tennis tournament? Just not good enough.

His complaints about the balls are also not new. He first raised the issue at the China Open last year and has continued to do so. Other players, including Alexander Zverev, have supported his concerns.

With this early loss, Medvedev is likely to drop out of the Top 10 for the first time in two years. He will lose the ranking points from his semi-final finish in Miami last year.

Daniil Medvedev loses early at Miami

Jaume Munar shocked former champion Daniil Medvedev at the Miami Open. The Spaniard defeated the World No. 8 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory. The match lasted 78 minutes, and Munar dominated from start to finish. This is his third career win against a Top 10 player.

Munar had never beaten a Top 10 player at a Masters 1000 or Grand Slam before. He stayed strong under pressure, saving two break points while serving for the match. Medvedev struggled, making 32 unforced errors compared to Munar’s 14.

The 27-year-old Spaniard’s last Top 10 win was against Casper Ruud in Tokyo in 2022. With this victory, he has now reached the third round at a Masters 1000 event for the third time. His previous runs came in Indian Wells 2022 and Madrid 2023.

Medvedev had reached the semi-finals in Indian Wells last week but has had a tough 2025 season. He has not won more than two matches in any of the five other events he played. The seventh seed, who won in Miami two years ago, has only one title since then. Now, he will look to improve during the clay court season.

The tournament starts just a week after the French Open, making the transition challenging for players. Medvedev, however, is familiar with this event. The 29-year-old has played in ‘s-Hertogenbosch five times before. He sees it as a great way to prepare for the grass-court season.

Medvedev first competed in the Libema Open from 2016 to 2018. He reached the quarterfinals in 2017 but lost in the round of 16 in 2016 and 2018. After a break, he returned in 2022 and made it to the final, where he lost to Tim van Rijthoven. In 2025, he played his fifth tournament but was eliminated in the round of 16.

Despite some early exits, Medvedev values this tournament as preparation for Wimbledon. His 2022 runner-up finish proves he can perform well on grass. The 2025 Libema Open will take place from June 9 to 15, and fans will be eager to see how Medvedev performs.
