Daniil Medvedev crashed out early in the One Point Slam at the Australian Open on Wednesday (January 14). The former World No.1 fell to amateur tennis player Petar Jovic before losing to World No.4 Amanda Anisimova, as he missed out on the opportunity to win one million Australian dollars before the first Grand Slam of the year.
The One Point Slam has become one of the most famous competitions ahead of the Australian Open, as tennis fans often enjoy it for the uncertainty it brings. Eight amateur winners from earlier state championship rounds played across Australia in 2025 will be involved, as will the right players who qualified in Melbourne.
Another eight wild cards will be included, with most of them being celebrities and invited personalities. Then 24 top professional players will play in the e event, making it 48 competitors in total. One of the major rules of the event is that each match will be contested by a single point on the court, while a game of ‘rock, paper, and scissors’ will decide who serves.
Petar Jovic was the amateur player from Australia who took on Medvedev on Wednesday at the 14,800-capacity Rod Laver Arena. Jovic served with Medvedev returning brilliantly, but in the middle of the rally, Medvedev hit a drop shot, which forced Jovic to leave the baseline and get to it in time.

Medvedev then displayed his experience by hitting a lob shot, but Jovic ran for the ball and hit an amazing tweener that left the Russian star in big shock. The audience in the stands was amazed by Jovic as Medvedev placed his two hands on his head with an unbelievable expression written all over his face.
After that, Medvedev went on to face Anisimova and, like against his former opponent, he failed to win the ‘rock, paper, and scissors’ game. However, Anisimova won the point, making sure Medvedev exited the One Point Slam without a win. Nonetheless, amateur player Jordan Smith defeated Anisimova in the quarter-finals.
Daniil Medvedev claims his first title of the 2026 season in Brisbane
Daniil Medvedev claimed his first title of the season at the Brisbane International on Sunday (January 11) after beating American star Brandon Nakashima. The title victory means that Medvedev has won two titles since he began working with Thomas Johansson and South African Rohan Goetzke in September.

Before his partnership with the duo, Medvedev was working with French coach Gilles Cervara. But at the 2025 US Open, he felt increasingly distant from the elite players and lacked the power to compete with stronger ball strikers, so he opted to change his technical direction, and that has been successful.
Medvedev won the Almaty Open in October, his first title since May 2023. Also, the Brisbane International is his 22nd title at 22 different tournaments. During his post-match press conference, he noted that he hopes to win his second title in a tournament, but he’s aiming to win the Australian Open:
I will try to put myself a goal to try to win a second title where I won it somewhere. Not sure it’s going to happen but I will try. It’s a fun story: 22 titles, 22 different cities. Again, look, if it continues in Melbourne (at the Australian Open), great. I never won in Melbourne, so could be 23. I’m just doing my best, and I will be honest, I do hope I win somewhere the second title, [before] I finish my career, in the same city.
Medvedev is one of the most decorated active players on tour. With 22 tour-level titles, he ranks fifth behind Novak Djokovic (101 titles), Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Alexander Zverev, all tied at 24 titles.
