In Short
  • Daniil Medvedev has a 45-35 win-loss record on clay, improving from 16-23 before the 2023 season.
  • He humorously compared his struggles on clay to Rafael Nadal's dominance, acknowledging Nadal's 14 Roland Garros titles.
  • Medvedev has won one Grand Slam title and reached five finals, but he believes he won't win many more in his career.

Daniil Medvedev hates playing on clay. Even for a top player like him, transitioning to clay after months of hardcourt matches is quite tricky.

Since the conclusion of Wimbledon, players only compete in hardcourt events until April, when the European clay season starts. Medvedev has a 45-35 win-loss record on clay. Before the 2023 season, he had a win-loss record of 16–23, but he gradually improved his performance and even went on to win the 2023 Italian Open, also his first and only title on the surface so far.

The first Masters 1000 of the season on clay, the Monte-Carlo Masters, is underway. It was here back in 2016 that Medvedev competed in his career’s first Masters 1000 tournament, though he failed to progress to the main draw. The onetime semifinalist in the tournament suffered a third-round exit last year.

The seventh seed will be locking horns with the winner of the first-round match between Matteo Berrettini and Roberto Bautista Agut. Ahead of kick-starting his campaign on clay, Medvedev, during his interview with Bolshe! joked about his clay woes with a hilarious comparison with the King of Clay, Rafael Nadal.

I don’t think anyone in the world can tell me something about clay tennis that would make me go, ‘Wow, how didn’t I know that before, now I’m gonna [win] every Roland Garros like Rafa’.

Nadal won 14 Roland Garros titles. He had a 484–51 win-loss record on the surface, winning 63 out of his 92 singles titles on clay.

Daniil Medvedev explains why he won’t win many Grand Slam titles in his career

Daniil Medvedev is the winner of just one Grand Slam, the 2021 US Open. But the Russian has also played five more Grand Slam finals, losing them to Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Jannik Sinner. The last time he played a Major final was at the 2024 Australian Open, where the Italian overcame a two-set deficit to win his career’s first Major title.

After a subpar 2025 season, the 30-year-old finally regained his form and went on to clinch this year’s Brisbane International and the Dubai Tennis Championships by defeating Brandon Nakashima and receiving the walkover from Tallon Griekspoor. He then reached the final of the Indian Wells Masters but failed to beat Sinner. It was his first final in a Masters 1000 event since the 2023 Italian Open.

I think it was quite good. I’m someone who always wants more, especially the way I played some of the tournaments. I’m not happy that I didn’t manage to bring that to all the tournaments I played, but that’s how tennis is. That’s the difference between the guys who win 20 Grand Slams and me, who is very good but isn’t going to win 20 Grand Slams.

Daniil Medvedev told the ATP Media

Medvedev, however, failed to make a deep run in Miami, losing to Francisco Cerundolo in the third round. His performances this season have helped him get back into the top 10, and now he stands third on the Live Race to Turin rankings table, below Sinner and top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz.

I’m third in the Race and feeling happy with my game…. With my game and my shots, I’m not someone who can play bad and win matches. So to win a lot of matches, I need to play well. So if I’ve won a lot of matches, it means I’ve been playing well.

Daniil Medvedev added

Medvedev has yet to win a Big Title since his win in Rome. Last year on the clay swing, Medvedev produced his best when he reached the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open.
