Daniil Medvedev has been one of the most consistent players in the past five years on Tour. Early this year, he turned 28 just days after finishing as the runner-up to Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open.

In a recent interview, he explained that he felt “stupid” at his birthday celebration due to a series of events that left him embarrassed. Medvedev was born on February 11, 1996, in Moscow.

In an interview with Vogue, Medvedev was asked about his best off-court moment of 2024. The World No. 4 recalled an experience during his 28th birthday celebrations with friends.

On my birthday, my friends surprised me by gathering together in a restaurant — but they made it happen that I arrived there a little bit by accident, and among this group there were different friends, some of whom didn’t know each other. And so I walk in the restaurant thinking we’re just going to be two or three people — and there’s this big table there with a lot of my friends, and I see them one by one, and I get so confused.

The former World No. 1 stated that he felt embarrassed after realizing that it was his friends who orchestrated the large gathering in the restaurant. He added that it was one of the highlights of the year.

Then I see another friend at this table, and I didn’t think these two guys knew each other, so I’m like, “Wow — what a coincidence! How do these two guys know each other?” And then when I see the third and fourth friends, I’m finally like, “Oh — okay.” I felt so stupid — it was so awkward and so embarrassing. But that was a highlight of the year for me — of course

Medvedev has been disappointing on the court this season. He has failed to win a title despite reaching two finals. The 28-year-old has been plagued by inconsistency, especially in the second half of the year.

Medvedev is currently one loss away from exiting the tournament, which he will gladly take knowing his country is not competing at the Davis Cup. When asked where he would love to spend his off-season vacation, he revealed that he plans to stay at home with his family.

No big plans—we have so many big events during the season that for me, the best thing about the off-season is keeping it calm, staying at home, and enjoying yourself—it’s very rare that we can do it.

Medvedev will play Alex de Minaur on Tuesday (November 12) at the ATP Finals. The tie is a must-win for the Russian and his opponent, as they both lost their opening matches.
