Novak Djokovic stunned Carlos Alcaraz in the 2024 Paris Olympics final, beating the Spaniard in straight sets. Despite Alcaraz being the favorite based on his form and the fact that he had won the French Open title at the same venue a few weeks ago, Djokovic pulled off a win for the ages. This outcome surprised Daniil Medvedev, who had expected Alcaraz to clinch the gold in Paris.
The Russian tennis ace said that while he did not watch the match due to his practice session in Montreal, he did have some expectations about the result. However, contrary to what he thought, Djokovic won the match to take the top step of the podium.
For the Olympics, me personally, I unfortunately didn’t see the match. I was in Montreal time. I had practice or something. But I thought the way Carlos is going into the match, won Roland Garros and won Wimbledon against Novak, played amazing in Olympics, I honestly thought he’d win. And then Novak, 37 years old, I saw some highlights, playing maybe the best match of the season.Daniil Medvedev said in a pess conference
Medvedev praised Djokovic for the way he played when he was under immense pressure. He was amazed by the Serbian’s gameplay.
I was amazed by how he was able to come into this match where there’s a lot of pressure.. it’s the only thing he never won.. and still be even better than himself usually and beat Carlos who was unstoppable this year. I was amazed even more, even if I’m already amazed by Novak. Unbelievable. Not much more I can add.Daniil Medvedev added
With his triumph in Paris, Djokovic became only the fifth player to complete a career Golden Slam — winning all four Majors and the singles Olympic gold medal.
Daniil Medvedev into the second round of the 2024 US Open
While Daniil Medvedev was amazed by Novak Djokovic‘s level in the Paris Olympics final, the Russian will hope that he does not get to face the Serbian at the 2024 US Open. Medvedev entered the second round of the season’s last Grand Slam tournament with a four-set win against Dusan Lajovic.
Despite underwhelming performances in Montreal and Cincinnati, Medvedev dished out a comparatively clean performance against Lajovic, beating the Serbian 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. After the match, the 2021 US Open champion said that he was happy to get past Lajovic.
Second set, [Dusan] played an amazing level. I don’t think you can play better than he did. I actually played quite good and lost the set. I was really tired at the end of the second set. And then I managed to put some extra pressure on him a little bit. I played aggressive, didn’t face a break point afterwards. Just played a tiny bit better.Daniil Medvedev said (H/T: ATP Tour)
The 28-year-old is set to face Fabian Marozsan in the second round. The former World No. 1 will be hoping to go one step further than he did last year when he finished as the runner-up to Novak Djokovic.
