Last year, Daniil Medvedev struggled a great deal, so much so that it was becoming difficult for him to make deep runs. Except for Wimbledon, Medvedev played five-set matches in the other three Grand Slams last year.
Only at the Australian Open did he clinch a win against Kasidit Samrej in the first round in five sets, only to later suffer a five-set defeat at the hands of Learner Tien. Medvedev then overcame a two-set deficit against Cameron Norrie in the first round of the French Open but failed to end the match in his favor. After losing to Benjamin Bonzi in the Wimbledon first round, he lost a dramatic first-round US Open match against the Frenchman.
He made the final not before the Halle Open, where Alexander Bublik denied him the win. The former World No.1 finally ended his trophy drought by defeating Corentin Moutet in the final of the Almaty Open, winning his first title since the 2023 Italian Open.
Medvedev started the 2026 season strongly as he finished his first tournament of the year in his favor. He participated in the Brisbane International and beat Brandon Nakashima to lift his career 22nd title. Interestingly, all of the 22 titles he won were in 22 different cities.
In the ongoing Australian Open, Medvedev eliminated Jesper De Jong in straight sets and dropped the first set when he met Quentin Halys in the next round. The 2021 US Open champion was proud of not finishing the match in five sets and trolled himself by writing this on the camera lens: “Not 5 sets.”

Medvedev will next be locking horns with Fabian Marozsan. The Hungarian ace first eliminated Arthur Rinderknech, then knocked out Kamil Majchrzak in the second round. Medvedev holds a 2-0 head-to-head lead over the 26-year-old.
Oleksandra Oliynykova slams Daniil Medvedev for participating in a controversial exhibition event in Russia
Daniil Medvedev participated in the controversial Northern Palmyra Trophies exhibition event, funded and sponsored by Gazprom, a Russian energy company that funds the country’s war against Ukraine. For his participation, Ukrainian ace Oleksandra Oliynykova criticized him and accused several Russian as well as Belarusian players of supporting Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko.

Medvedev participated. Many others did too. Meanwhile, I was waking up with a start because of the explosions. Do you think that’s normal? I don’t.
Oleksandra Oliynykova said (via French newspaper L’Equipe)
Medvedev, following his second-round win, was asked about Oliynykova’s comments. The three-time Australian Open finalist bluntly said he respects all opinions.
In general, I respect all the opinions of all the people. I try…on the court, actually a bit different, right (smiles)? But outside the court, I respect all the opinions, but that’s her opinion, and honestly, I don’t have anything to say about it.

Oliynykova made her Grand Slam main draw debut in the Melbourne Slam. She lost to defending champion Madison Keys in the first round. She made headlines after appearing at the press conference wearing a T-shirt with these words printed on it: “I need your help to protect Ukrainian women and children but I can’t talk about it here.“
Medvedev, on the other hand, first reached the Australian Open final in 2021, losing the match to Novak Djokovic. The following year, Rafael Nadal overcame a two-set deficit to clinch the win in the final over Medvedev.
Medvedev also squandered a two-set lead and eventually lost when he met World No.1 Jannik Sinner in the 2024 Australian Open final. The last time he made a deep run in a Major was at the 2024 US Open, where his campaign ended in the quarterfinals.
