Daniil Medvedev is one of the most improved players on the tennis circuit in the past year. The Russian won the Paris Masters title and the Nitto ATP Finals towards the back end of last season. This year, Medvedev reached the Australian Open finals, where he was defeated by Novak Djokovic in straight sets.

However, the Russian came storming back and lifted his first individual ATP title of the season at the Open 13 in Marseille last week. More importantly, Medvedev also surpassed Rafael Nadal in the ATP Rankings and is currently second in the world.

Speaking on this incredible achievement, Medvedev said that it was a good feeling to win the Marseille Open title and claim the world number two spot. “Winning the title in Marseille, I knew I was going to be number two a few weeks ago. It feels really good to win this tournament before becoming number 2 in the world, the Russian said.

The reporter reminded Daniil Medvedev that he had won two of his last three titles in France. He won the Paris Masters in November last year and the Open 13 last week in Marseille. The reporter asked if Medvedev was raring to play at the French Open later this year. The Russian stated that he was looking forward to improving his performances on clay courts this year.

There is Monte-Carlo which is played on French territory as well (smile). Otherwise, yes Roland-Garros, it’s a big challenge. I am able to play well on clay. It’s a tournament that I miss in terms of performance and I hope to have a good result,” said Medvedev.

Daniil Medvedev has had a dismal record on clay courts, especially at the French Open where he has been knocked out in the first round in his past four appearances in Paris. Speaking about his objectives for the season, the Russian stated that he wanted to improve in training and win a Grandslam title.

My main goal is to do well in training and try to win every tournament I play. There are not many places to climb in the world rankings … You have to win Grand Slams, I have three left to win. I will do my best to prepare them well,” Medvedev added.
