Daniil Medvedev is still chasing his first title of the season. He’s currently competing at the Canadian Open, a tournament he won back in 2021, and has already booked his place in the third round. However, the Russian star is looking forward to getting better results on tour before the end of the year.
Medvedev reached his first final of the year at the Terra Wortmann Open but lost the title to Alexander Bublik in straight sets. The former World No.1 then crashed out in the first round of the Wimbledon Championships after losing in four sets to Benjamin Bonzi, a match he was the favorite to win.
He kicked off his North American hard-court swing as one of the favorites to win the Washington Open. He started strongly, beating Reilly Opelka, then Yibing Wu to reach his eighth quarter-finals of the year. It was at that stage his run came to an end after losing to Frenchman Corentin Moutet 6-1, 4-6, 4-6.
After the loss, Medvedev arrived at Toronto for the Canadian Open, a tournament he has won once in his career. He opened his campaign at the Masters 1000 tournament after beating Dalibor Svrcina 7-6(3), 6-4 to reach the third round. The Russian now holds a 13-6 win-loss record at the tournament.
During an interview with Bolshe!, he was asked how he felt since his quarter-finals loss at Washington. The 29-year-old revealed that going forward he doesn’t have a specific goal on tour as he only aims to squeeze in better results on the court:
It’s hard to set specific goals, of course, you want to play well and win matches, but at the same time, I played well in Washington, but maybe I could have played some shots better and won the match. Therefore, the goal is to squeeze the maximum out of myself. There is no other way, which is the main goal; the results will come. Continue trying to do the maximum, maybe even more than I am doing now.
With the absence of Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, Jack Draper, and Carlos Alcaraz, Medvedev is the 10th seed at the Canadian Open, being ranked World No.14. The former World No.1 has a chance of winning the title due to the absence of the aforementioned stars. Nonetheless, he still might face tough competition from Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz, and Lorenzo Musetti.
Daniil Medvedev shares his opinion about the hot conditions of the North American hard-court swing
One of the biggest challenges at this North American hard-court swing has been the hot conditions. At Washington, players struggled with the humidity on the court. In Toronto, it has almost been the same issue. In fact, there is currently a heat warning issue in the City as the temperature is expected to remain in the mid-to-high 80s (Fahrenheit) throughout the week.

Daniil Medvedev struggled due to the weather at the Washington Open last week and will now have to deal with the same at the Canadian Open. Following his opening match win, he revealed that conditions only get worse if a player loses:
It’s not really that different, it’s still very humid here. Sometimes I get the feeling that, in principle, I like it more when it’s humid than when it’s dry. But it also depends on the results of the tournament, sometimes you win a tournament in the heat and think: ah, it wasn’t that hot, of course, because you won, and when you lose in the first round, you think: it was so hot, I couldn’t walk at all, I couldn’t run.
Medvedev didn’t get past the second round of the tournament last year after losing to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in three sets. He has now gone beyond that stage at this year’s edition, but will face a tough test against defending champion Alexei Popyrin in the third round of the Canadian Open.
