In Short
  • Daniil Medvedev suffered a shocking double bagel defeat, losing 6-0, 6-0 to Matteo Berrettini in the Monte Carlo Masters.
  • Medvedev smashed his racket seven times during the match, resulting in a code violation warning.
  • Matteo Berrettini's victory marked his first double bagel win on tour and ended a three-match losing streak against Medvedev.

And who would have thought that Daniil Medvedev would fail to win even one game during his opening-round match at the Monte Carlo Masters? Medvedev will be nothing but greatly frustrated after being on the receiving end of a double bagel defeat.

Matteo Berrettini delivered a flawless performance on Wednesday (April 8) and shocked the entire tennis world in just 49 minutes. It was the first time Medvedev lost a tour-level match 6-0, 6-0, finishing it with 27 unforced errors.

After trailing 0-2 in the second set, the Russian completely lost his cool and let his frustrations out on his racket. He flung his racket away, then picked it up again, only to destroy it completely, and this he continued a few more times. Medvedev, in fact, had smashed his racket seven times.

He then walked toward his chair and threw the now destroyed racket into the bin. And as expected, he received a code violation warning.

Medvedev is quite vocal about his sufferings on clay as well as the difficulty of making a quick transition from hard courts to clay. He used to underperform so much on the surface before 2023, but that year, he conquered clay by defeating Holger Rune in the Italian Open final.

The win helped Berrettini snap his three-match losing streak against Medvedev in their fourth head-to-head meeting. Before this match, they had never faced each other on clay.

Wild card Matteo Berrettini has so far played two matches in the ongoing event but has yet to lose a set. After winning four games in a row in the first set, his first-round opponent, Roberto Bautista Agut, threw in the towel.

I think it was one of the best performances of my life. I think I missed three shots in the entire match, and it is not easy against a tricky player like Daniil. I think the game plan was perfect and my weapons were working. I faced two break points in the first game, and then after that, I felt I was playing better than him. I was not expecting to win zero, zero like that. But I kept my focus as I know one break or two breaks is not enough sometimes, so I kept pushing.

Matteo Berrettini said during the on-court interview after knocking out Daniil Medvedev

It was the first time the Italian won a double bagel victory on the tour. Up against him in the third round will be Joao Fonseca or Arthur Rinderknech.

I have been playing for a long time, so I felt it was really important to hold my serve at the start of the second set. It is a matter of a few points at the start, and then when you go up two breaks, you are more relaxed, and the ball is [flying] out of your racquet.

Matteo Berrettini added

Medvedev had a disappointing 2025 season, but he had found his form this season, winning titles at the Brisbane International by beating Brandon Nakashima and at the Dubai Tennis Championships after receiving a walkover from Tallon Griekspoor. He then made the final at the Indian Wells Masters after downing seven-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals.

But Medvedev lost to World No.2 Jannik Sinner in the final. Later in Miami, Francisco Cerundolo registered a three-set victory over him in the third round. The last time he won a Big Title was in Rome in 2024. In Monte Carlo, Medvedev produced his best performance when he reached the semifinals back in 2019.
