“Djokovic will still be there while Nadal and Federer will have retired” Daniil Medvedev on how the top 5 rankings will look in 2026

Daniil Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev has had a great run of form this year. After reaching the Australian Open 2021 Finals, he also won the Open 13 at Marseille, France. At the Open 13 he was specially impressive in the Quarter Finals where he beat rising star Italy’s Jannik Sinner in straight sets, 6-2 6-4.

In the Finals he overcame Pierre-Hugues Herbert in three sets. This great run of matches has seen Medvedev leapfrog Rafael Nadal and take the no.2 position on the ATP Rankings.

The enormity of the feat can be imagined by the fact that Medvedev is the first player outside the Big 4 to occupy the second position since Lleyton Hewitt since 2005. The Big 4 is of course Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.

Medvedev thinks that by 2026 both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal would have retired, but he believes that the World no.1 Novak Djokovic would still be around. Interestingly by 2026, Djokovic would be 38 years old. Medvedev is certain that the tour will be much more entertaining and competitive by the time 2026 comes around.

Medvedev saidI think Djokovic will still be there while Nadal and Federer will have retired. Thiem, Zverev, Tsitsipas and me will be there. The tour will keep being very entertaining and very competitive.”

He also named Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and himself as the players who will be on the top of the food chain then. 2026 is also significant for Medvedev as he has renewed his contract with LACOSTE till that year. Lacoste the French company not only sponsors his apparel but also his racket. Medvedev uses a Tecnifibre racket which is part of the Lacoste group.
