In January, when Daniil Medvedev kicked started his campaign at the Australian, he perhaps had no idea that two youngsters would trouble him from the very beginning. He somehow fended off Thailand’s Kasidit Samrej in a five-set thriller, but couldn’t make his comeback in the second round he played against Learner Tien.

The 19-year-old claimed the first two sets but the three-time Australian Open finalist forced a comeback and clinched the next two. The fifth set was pushed into the tie-breaker where the American emerged as the winner to move into the third round. Tien then progressed to the fourth round at Melbourne Park and this surprised Medvedev the most.

I was surprised in a good way that he won the next match because it is tough when you are 19 years old and you beat a top player, the next match is usually tough. That shows that he has huge potential to be able to pull this off.

Daniil Medvedev said at a press conference in Dubai

Tien beat Corentin Moutet in straight sets in the third round but fell to Lorenzo Sonego in the round of 16. The 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals runner-up secured his career-best win when he stunned World No.2 Alexander Zverev in the round of 16 of the ongoing Mexico Open.

The Russian is currently struggling with form issues as he hasn’t yet made it to the final of the previous four tournaments he played in the 2025 season. Medvedev started his campaign in Dubai against Jan-Lennard Struff and defeated him to set up the clash with big-serving Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, who the 29-year-old beat with scores of 6-4, 6-4.

You don’t have any time, so it’s pure reflexes [about Perricard’s serves]. It makes it even easier because if you don’t return it, you’re not even disappointed. There were some second serves I missed [however], and I was disappointed. You just try to do your best and I managed it pretty well today.

Daniil Medvedev said during his on-court interview

The first seed will face Tallon Griekspoor next and the upcoming match will be their first encounter on the ATP Tour. The 28-year-old Dutchman, before setting up the clash with the World No.6, fended off fifth seed Ugo Humbert.
