Daniil Medvedev may not be at his best right now, but he continues to entertain both on and off the court. After defeating Czech player Dalibor Svrcina in the opening match, the Russian marked his win with a quirky celebration. Known for his unusual on-court antics, Medvedev added another moment to his growing list.

This time, he chose a “sad clown” gesture to celebrate, following his memorable “salmon without breathing” routine from the 2021 US Open. His celebrations have become part of his identity, often reflecting his mood and adding humor to his victories.

Fans are now curious to see what Medvedev might do next if he can overcome defending champion Alexei Popyrin. His unique celebrations have become anticipated moments during tournaments, adding to his unpredictable charm.

However, the path ahead is not easy. Medvedev shares his side of the draw with tough opponents like Alexander Zverev, Casper Ruud, and Lorenzo Musetti. To repeat his 2021 title run in Canada, he’ll need to find top form quickly and maintain focus throughout.

Daniil Medvedev advances at the Canadian Open

Former World No.1 Daniil Medvedev faced a tough challenge from lucky loser Dalibor Svrcina in the second round of the Canada Masters in Toronto. The 2021 champion managed a straight-sets win, 7-6, 6-4, after nearly two hours of intense play. Despite being the underdog, Svrcina pushed Medvedev hard, winning only 11 fewer points overall and recovering from deficits multiple times during the match.

The first set saw plenty of momentum shifts. Medvedev broke for a 3-2 lead but gave it right back in the following game. He regained the advantage at 4-3 and held for 5-3 but failed to close out the set, allowing Svrcina to level at 5-5. The set eventually went to a tie-break, where Medvedev stepped up, using a forehand winner and an ace to seal it 7-3.

In the second set, Svrcina twice went ahead with breaks but couldn’t maintain his lead. Medvedev broke back each time, showing resilience under pressure. At 4-4, he converted a key break opportunity and then served out the match to book his place in the third round.

Both players struggled with their first serves and combined for 80 unforced errors. However, Medvedev’s 22 winners compared to Svrcina’s nine made the difference. The Russian also performed better at the net and created more break opportunities, converting five of 12 chances to edge out the determined Czech.

Daniil Medvedev joins Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner in a unique list

Russian star Daniil Medvedev claimed a solid second-round win at the Canadian Open, defeating Dalibor Svrcina in straight sets. With this victory, he advanced to face defending champion Alexei Popyrin in the third round. Although Medvedev’s ranking has dropped in recent months, he continues to perform well at major tournaments.

The win in Toronto pushed Medvedev’s career win rate at ATP Masters 1000 events to 70%. He now joins Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner as the only players born after 1990 to reach that mark. This places him in an elite group and highlights his consistency at the highest level.

Medvedev has had a strong record during the North American hard court swing, particularly in the lead-up to the US Open. He previously made four straight finals at hard court events during this stretch. Only legends like Andre Agassi and Ivan Lendl had matched that feat since the mid-90s.

With top contenders like Alcaraz, Sinner, Djokovic, and Draper missing from this year’s tournament, Medvedev has a real chance to go deep. Though seeded tenth due to several withdrawals, the path ahead remains challenging. A win over Popyrin would set up a likely fourth-round clash with Holger Rune.
