Russian tennis ace Daniil Medvedev‘s beef with the US Open crowd continued as the former World No. 1 accused them of showing him little to no support during his second-round match at the 2024 US Open. During Medvedev’s clash with Fabias Marozsan on Thursday (August 29), the 2021 US Open champion was orchestrating the crowd at times to gather some support.

After the match, Medvedev was asked about interaction with the spectators and his ideal engagement from a crowd. In reply, the Russian ace said that the way everything played out, he would like to show some ‘different fingers’ to the crowd.

The Russian ace recalled his infamous interview from the 2019 US Open when he dissed the crowd after his second-round win over Feliciano Lopez. Notably, Medvedev had thanked the crowd for their energy through their booing, which he claimed helped him win that match.

Well, it was on this court 5 years ago 2nd round. The ideal way is to not do it like this, some different fingers. That’s the ideal way. It’s almost all the time unless Roger is playing or the home favorite is playing, whoever is losing gets a little more support to try to get into the match. He started playing really well in the 3rd set so the crowd got behind him. Every time I would win some important point I was like ‘Come on, give me something a little bit'.

After hitting the winner against Marozsan, Medvedev immediately turned to the crowd and asked them to calm down.

Daniil Medvedev compares his match against Fabian Marozsan to an Italian restaurant

The match today, I felt like an Italian restaurant. The food is great, the aftertaste is great but your head is like — so noisy. All the match I was like, ‘Try to focus! Try to focus!’ It was a fun feeling. I managed to stay really solid, some great moments, and I’m really happy to be through to the next round.
Daniil Medvedev said in his on-court interview (H/T: ATP Tour)

Medvedev will face Italian Flavio Cobolli in the third round. He will take confidence from his 6-3, 6-2, 7-6(5) second-round win. Despite making just 47 percent of his first serves, he was nearly flawless in his rallies, committing 25 unforced errors to Marozsan’s 45 across the two-hour and four-minute match.

After early losses in Montreal and Cincinnati, Medvedev has started his campaign in New York with two good wins while also improving to 37-13 on the season following Thursday’s win. The 20-time tour-level titlist is seeking his first trophy since Rome last year. While he has made quite a few finals since then, he will be hoping to go the distance in New York this fortnight.
