In Short
  • Daniil Medvedev suffered an opening-round defeat at Roland Garros, losing to Adam Walton in five sets.
  • Medvedev's wife, Daria, scolded him during the match for complaining about the heat, leading to a viral argument.
  • This loss marks Medvedev's fourth first-round exit in his last five Grand Slam appearances.

Daniil Medvedev has a love-hate relationship with clay. When he reached the semifinals of the Italian Open, he was expected to at least make a deep run in the ongoing Roland Garros. But Medvedev, for the seventh time in his career, suffered an opening-round exit in the clay-court Major.

On Tuesday (May 26th), the 30-year-old lost to Australia’s Adam Walton 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4, and this marked the fourth time he lost in the first round in his last five Grand Slam appearances. This, in fact, is the second consecutive time Medvedev crashed out of the first round of the French Open (last year he lost to Cameron Norrie in five sets).

A Daniil Medvedev match is never without some kind of entertainment (well, at least most of the time this is the case). So when Medvedev was competing against Martin Landaluce in the quarterfinal of the Italian Open, he and his wife Daria Medvedeva engaged in an intense exchange, with the latter even heard giving him advice.

While the sixth seed’s first-round defeat in Paris made global headlines, it’s not the only thing that has grabbed fans’ attention. Daria, this time, scolded her husband for complaining about the heat, and the video of their argument has now gone viral.

It’s hot for everybody. Everybody is suffering. You need to behave!

Medvedev being Medvedev, responded with: “When I start finding the court, I’ll start to behave.” The argument did not end there. The 2021 US Open was irked that Walton hit an accurate first serve, and he told his wife, “Can he stop serving on the line?” And Daria replied with, “He hadn’t hit a single first serve in this game before that.”

The Russian ace has played just one clay-court final in his career. It was in the 2023 Italian Open where he defeated Holger Rune, and since then, he has yet to win another Big Title.

Daniil Medvedev on what went wrong during his match against Adam Walton

Daniil Medvedev, surprisingly, did not win a match at Roland Garros before 2021. He made his debut in 2017, lost in the first round, and in the next three seasons, it was no different.

In 2021, after finally clinching a match, Medvedev went on to make the quarterfinals and has yet to reach this stage since then. As Medvedev once again saw history repeat itself, he is considering a schedule change next year.

I want to play Grand Slams. I know that I am in good shape and I can play well in Roland Garros, as well. I can. It’s just tougher for me [than the other Majors], and first rounds are usually tougher for me, but I will always come here. Maybe I should consider playing a tournament before, which I usually don’t do before Grand Slams, but when it doesn’t work, why not? That’s the only thing I will consider next year.

Daniil Medvedev said at the press conference

Medvedev has already played three finals this year. After winning the Brisbane International and the Dubai Tennis Championships, he lost to Jannik Sinner in the Indian Wells Masters.

Not an easy match. I didn’t play my best tennis. He played good [in] some moments, some moments not that good, and I managed to take the match when he didn’t play that well. That’s it. I didn’t manage to raise my level enough to win the whole match, and that’s why I lost.

Daniil Medvedev added

Adam Walton now holds a 2-1 head-to-head record over the former World No.1. He will next be clashing with Zachary Svajda.
