Daniil Medvedev could be the new world no.2 if he wins the ATP 500 event at Rotterdam
Daniil Medvedev
Daniil Medvedev is currently ranked no.3 in the world. But, all that could change if he wins the ATP Rotterdam Open event which starts next week. The ATP 500 event win will give him enough points to leapfrog Rafael Nadal and take the no.2 ranking.
Medvedev has had a great start to life after tennis returned post the pandemic. He won the Paris Masters, the ATP World Tour Finals, the ATP Cup with Russia, before reaching the finals of the Australian Open 2021.
Seeded no.1 at the event which starts from the 1st of March (1st March – 7th March) Medvedev is the favourite to win this and take home the Single winners purse of 1,08,776 USD.
Nadal’s withdrawal means only four of the top ten players are set to compete at the ATP Rotterdam
Rafael Nadal was all set to compete at the ATP Rotterdam event until a lower back injury forced him out. His absence will definitely take some sheen off the first ATP 500 event of the year.
But, the Rotterdam open will have other top ten players like Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev and Andrey Rublev competing for the top prize. Apart from these names, the other important name is that of Gael Monfils. Monfils has won this event consecutively in 2019 and again in 2020. Stan Wawrinka, the 2015 champion, will also compete at this event. There is also a former Grand Slam champion, who got a wild card entry into this event, Andy Murray in the mix.
