It’s been over two years since CM Punk was shown the door by AEW. But he still apparently lives rent-free in the heads of some talent working there. Darby Allin, who was Punk’s first opponent in AEW, has indirectly labeled the Chicagoan a cancer that got cut out. Allin made the admission during an interview with Ariel Helwani.
He also underscored that the backstage morale in the company is at an all-time high. ‘The Daredevil’ began with mentioning that there was indeed some lingering tension within backstage circles a few years back in AEW.
He then applauded the promotion’s head honcho, Tony Khan, for fostering an environment where every talent on the roster is trying to be the best version of themselves. Allin affirmed that the egotistical wrestlers who didn’t want to lose are no longer in AEW.
The cancer got cut out. Just egotistical wrestlers that don’t want to lose….And at the end of the day, this is all staged. It’s the greatest thing in the world, but it’s staged. So if you’re going to have an ego about that, get out of the f*cking sport.Darby Allin during interview with Ariel Helwani
Darby Allin says the vibe around AEW is amazing now compared to a few years ago, believes the ‘cancer’ was cut out of the company:

“It's amazing. I'm not just saying that. A few years ago, you definitely felt like this tension, but now, everybody's on the same page. Let's make… pic.twitter.com/gqWXKfRQdv
At first, it might seem like a generalized statement for some of the ex-AEW names who couldn’t resonate with the audience on the same level as the company would’ve expected them to. But given that Allin asked those with an ego in a staged form of entertainment like pro wrestling to go be in the UFC, it pretty much gave it away who he was referring to—CM Punk. The Seattle-born wrestler also claimed that once that was no longer a factor in AEW, he felt relieved.

Allin’s comments haven’t sat well with the netizens online. Some even trolled the former TNT Champion over his egotistical remarks about the person who sold out arenas for AEW and helped the company achieve its first-ever $1 million gate at Double or Nothing in May 2022.
Punk was fired from AEW after an altercation with Jack Perry at All In: London. A disciplinary committee spearheaded by Bryan Danielson reached the conclusion that it’d be in everyone’s best interest to let Punk go.
Darby Allin explains why CM Punk’s former rival is a locker room leader in AEW
In the aforementioned interview, Darby Allin named Jon Moxley as a true locker room leader in AEW. The former tag team partner of Sting backed the erstwhile Dean Ambrose as someone who leads from the front by being there from the start to the end of the shows. Allin highlighted Moxley’s humility, as he doesn’t have an ego, and that’s why the 32-year-old sees him in ‘The Lunatic Fringe’.

Allin recently lost a coffin match to Moxley last month at AEW All Out. Speaking of the latter, he does share an interesting history with CM Punk, who was subtly referred to as a cancer by Allin. At the All Out pay-per-view in 2022, Punk beat Moxley to become a two-time AEW Champion. After the show ended, that’s exactly where things first started getting rough between the ‘Second City Saint’ and AEW.

During All Out’s post-show media scrum, Punk set the record straight on former friend Scott Colton, aka Colt Cabana. The 46-year-old clarified that he has never tried to sabotage Cabana’s wrestling career since they grew apart in late 2013. Punk ultimately dragged the company’s EVPs, viz., Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks, whom he dismissed as irresponsible people.
‘The Cookie Master’ lashed out at them for spreading lies in the media that he was behind Cabana’s AEW ouster. It resulted in a physical altercation afterwards featuring Punk and the EVPs he namedropped during the presser. After the reported incident came to light, everyone involved was suspended indefinitely.
What it actually did to the title match he had with Moxley early on in the night was render it null and void, as Punk was stripped of the AEW title. The ‘Best in the World’ even tore his triceps during the Moxley bout, for which he had to undergo surgery during the time he was suspended by AEW.
