Russian tennis ace Daria Kasatkina is known for her vocal nature. The 27-year-old was among the first players to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the bravest part was, she did it despite hailing from the same country. Kasatkina has openly suggested that the war be called off and things go back to normalcy.
She was called a ‘foreign agent’ for the same but that did not change Kasakina’s opinion. But things became tougher for her when she revealed her sexuality and announced that she was in a relationship with another female Russian athlete, Natasha Zabiiako, a former Olympic skater.
This led to a backlash for her and she had to leave the country. Although Kasatkina spends most of her time traveling across the globe for tournaments, she also feels the urge to go back to her homeland. However, the Russian ace says she would do it only if there are changes to the laws for people like her.
Obviously, war has to end. And a few laws [have] to be changed. [Homophobic laws?] Yes. That has to be changed in order for me to feel safe going back. I'm missing my home, and one day I want to come back. When this day will come, nobody knows. But I will wait for it.Daria Kasatkina said when asked what changes she wants before going back to Russia.
Daria Kasatkina says she doesn’t feel like ‘fish in water’ anymore
Daria Kasatkina delved deep into her relationship with Russia as she was asked if her relationship with her country was complicated. The 27-year-old said that it was not the case before. However, ever since the war started, she does not enjoy being ther anymore.
Kasatkina said that while she felt like a fish in water when living in Russia a couple of years back, the feeling is not the same for her anymore.
Well, not exactly with Russia. I love my country. So, before the war started, I spent so good quality time there. I really was enjoying coming back there, spending time with my family, friends. I felt there, like, a fish in the water. Now, probably not!Daria Kasatkina said during an interview with CBS.
She also talked about missing her parents who chose to stay in Russia. Notably, Kasatkina’s three brothers moved out of Russia and settled in Canada but her parents chose to stay in their homeland and the tennis ace is worried about them. Nevertheless, she is confident that they will be doing fine considering the fact that she hasn’t crossed a line.
