In the offseason, the New York Mets suffered a major blow as Pete Alonso officially left them. Darryl Strawberry, whose home run record Alonso broke last season, claimed that the “Polar Bear” will “regret” his decision.
Alonso had opted out of his deal after the 2024 season as well. In 2023, he had turned down a 7-year, $158 million contract extension with the team.
He would return to the Mets in 2025 by signing a 2-year, $54 million deal. This deal had an opt-out clause after the 2025 season.
After making $30 million in 2025, Alonso would use that clause and leave the $24 million that he would have made in 2026 through this contract. His decision came after the Mets lost to the Miami Marlins on the final day of the season and missed out on the playoffs.
In December, the first baseman would pen down a deal with the Baltimore Orioles. He signed a 5-year, $155 million deal with the O’s and made his way to the American League.

Statistically, Alonso had another impressive season. The 31-year-old batted with a .272 average and hit 38 home runs, and had 126 RBIs.
The historic moment for him came on August 12. In the third inning against the Atlanta Braves, Alonso smashed a 2-run shot against Spencer Strider. This saw him surpass Strawberry for the most home runs hit by a Mets player at 253.

He eventually finished the season at 264 home runs for the Mets. Just 5 months after that record-breaking moment, Alonso left the Mets.
While reacting to his move, Strawberry recently claimed he was “shocked” to hear about this and expressed that Alonso would “regret” this move.
I was really shocked that Pete would leave New York for Baltimore… One day he is going to wake up just like I did and regret you didn’t stick where you are at… Don’t get me wrong; I am not getting on Baltimore… Baltimore is a good place, but it’s not New York.
Darryl Strawberry said as per SNY

Strawberry made his MLB debut with the Mets in 1983. He would go on to spend 8 seasons with them. In November 1990, he would join the Los Angeles Dodgers and end his tenure with the Mets.
He went on to spend 3 seasons with the LA-based side before joining the San Francisco Giants in 1994. He would spend 5 seasons with the New York Yankees from 1995 to 1999. He would remain suspended for the entire 2000 season after testing positive for drugs, which effectively brought an end to his career.
Pete Alonso has exciting start to Orioles career in Spring Training
Last week, the fans finally got to see Pete Alonso in a Baltimore Orioles jersey as he took part in the Spring Training games. The player has had an exciting start to his O’s career with 2 home runs in 2 games.

Alonso’s first game with the Orioles came against the New York Yankees. With the game scoreless in the 6th inning, he smashed a 2-run home run off Bradley Hanner. His shot proved to be the difference as the Orioles won 2-0.

He would then go deep against the Detroit Tigers. In their 4-4 tie against the AL Central side, Alonso smashed a solo shot off left-hander Konnor Pilkington in the third inning.
He will now be hoping to continue this good run as the Orioles look to bounce back from a disappointing campaign in 2025. After back-to-back playoff appearances in 2023 and 2024, the O’s went 75-87 in 2025 and finished bottom of the AL East Standings.
