Darwin Nunez was at the heart of a heated brawl that broke out between Colombian fans and Uruguayan players. As revealed by players after the game, opposition fans were charging at players’ families, forcing the stars to intervene. With police and security in the stadium failing to ‘intervene’, Nunez and co. were forced to physically put themselves between the fans and their family.
Now, after almost 45 days since the incident, CONMEBOL have sanctioned players involved in the brawl. It is understood that Liverpool star Darwin Nunez has been banned for five matches, due to which the 25-year-old will have to miss out on World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay, Venezuela, Ecuador and Peru. The player will also be forced to pay a $20,000 fine.
Several fans expressed their outrage and criticized CONMEBOL for sanctioning players who tried to protect their own families. Many called the sanctions harsh while others felt that the decision was completely uncalled for.
Besides Nunez, Rodrigo Bentancur, Jose Maria Gimenez and Ronald Araujo have also been banned for four and three games respectively.
Liverpool clarify stance on Darwin Nunez transfer amidst links to Premier League rivals Arsenal
Fans were surprised to learn that Darwin Nunez was linked with a move to Premier League rivals Arsenal. The Uruguayan striker has become a popular figure at Anfield and fans adore him to say the least. However, reports claim that Arsenal are looking to land the player in a late swoop on a deal which has been labeled ‘improbable but not impossible’.
As for Nunez, he finds himself on the Liverpool bench and was reduced to a secondary role for the club’s first two Premier League games. Diogo Jota has ‘cemented’ his position as Slot’s favorite to play through the middle, although fans claim that his injury-prone nature will come in the way of his attempt to be a regular starter.
If anything, Liverpool are in need of more attacking depth and not the opposite. Their reluctancy to bring in new players coupled with the fact that the transfer window is coming to an end will most likely act against Arsenal and their rumored interest in making the Uruguayan a Gunner. Mikel Arteta most recently added Euro 2024 hero Mikel Merino to his squad.
