New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell has become a formidable foe for the Indian cricket team, registering his second successive hundred against the Men in Blue during the third ODI in Indore. His outstanding performance triggered a meme-fest among fans on social media.

Daryl Mitchell‘s affinity for Indian conditions is evident from his superb stats while playing in the country. At the end of the three-match ODI series between India and New Zealand, the 34-year-old finished as the highest run-getter with 352 runs.

He began the series with a brilliant 84-run innings in the first match in Vadodara, though it ended in defeat. Mitchell then followed this up with an unbeaten 131 in the Rajkot fixture, guiding his team to a seven-wicket victory.

Up and running in the third ODI at the Holkar Stadium in Indore, Mitchell once again proved to be the crisis man for his team after the Kiwis lost early wickets, falling to 5/2 in the 2nd over with the dismissals of openers Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls. Mitchell and Will Young then played cautiously, forming their second successive 50+ partnership, before Young was dismissed by Harshit Rana in the 13th over.

The 34-year-old all-rounder reached his hundred in the 36th over, boosting his already impressive record against the Men in Blues. Mitchell now boasts 741 runs in just 11 ODI innings against India, at an average of 74.10, including four centuries and two fifties. Mitchell’s innings concluded with 137 runs off 131 balls, featuring 15 fours and three sixes, helping New Zealand achieve a formidable first innings total of 337/8.

Meanwhile, Mitchell received support from Glenn Phillips, as the duo built a 219-run stand for the fourth wicket. Phillips completed his hundred off 83 deliveries in the 42nd over as well, marking the first time two NZ batters have scored hundreds against India in the same ODI innings. Despite both batsmen being dismissed late in the innings, captain Michael Bracewell stepped up to hit a quick-fire 28 runs off 18 balls in the end.

Mitchell’s career-best innings against the Men in Blue in Indore led to a viral ‘memefest’ as social media users expressed concern over the Kiwi all-rounder’s dominance in India. The focus now shifts to whether Mitchell will maintain this momentum in the upcoming T20I series.

Mitchell highlighted his red-hot form with his second triple-digit score of the ongoing series, meaning the 34-year-old has now scored 50+ in five of his last six ODIs. His mastery in Indian conditions triggered a ‘memefest’ among fans on social media, with many comparing Mitchell to Australian Travis Head, who is remembered by Indian cricket fans for his match-winning display in the 2023 World Cup final.

Some fans suggested that Mitchell would soon surpass Virat Kohli to claim the top spot as the world’s no.1 ODI batsman. Conversely, one fan criticized the Indian bowling attack, stating that the Kiwi all-rounder was humiliating the home team’s bowlers, and even pointed out that veteran New Zealand batter Kane Williamson, despite his excellent record in India, can not match Mitchell’s stats.

Nonetheless, Daryl Mitchell is also a vital player in NZ’s T20I squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup. However, his numbers in T20Is against the Men in Blue are surprisingly different, as he has only managed to score 241 runs in 14 matches at an average of just 20.08.
