It is impossible to overlook the greatness of an athlete like LeBron James. Fans and critics still regard him as one of the best players, even after spending 22 years in the NBA. While most retire around 35-36, James doesn’t show any signs of slowing down even in his 40s.

James won four NBA titles and the same number of MVPs during his prime, drawing comparisons with the legendary Michael Jordan. But what if he had chosen a different sport to pursue in college? Will he still be as great an athlete if he weren’t throwing hoops?

Star NFL wide receiver Davante Adams does not doubt in his mind that James would have been equally successful in football as he has been in the NBA.

[LeBron James] would’ve been one of the best receivers and tight ends of all time. No question. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen him play football. He can fly… I’ve never seen someone cover space on a basketball court [like him].

Davante Adams said during a recent segment of the Dan Patrick Show

James is in his twilight years and more often than not gets called out for flopping or picking up frequent injuries. Adams, being an athlete himself, understands the merit behind James’ actions.

I do think it’s a little bit strategy in there. I don’t think he’s actually banged up every time.

Banged up or not, James definitely looks up to James as one of the great sons of US sports.

Adams, 32, has also garnered significant recognition from his peers. He earned 3x All-Pro and 6x Pro Bowl honors since debuting for the Green Bay Packers in 2014. Adams has a great chance of cementing his place in Canton, but he would gladly accept winning a ring before seeing his bust alongside Jerry Rice and Cris Carter.

To see his dream come true, Adams signed with a strong Los Angeles Rams team in the summer, penning a two-year, $44 million deal.

Was LeBron James really good at football?

James attended St. Vincent-St. Mary in Akron during his teens, where he received his football education. He quickly gained notoriety as a tall receiver with exceptional pace. During his junior year, a young LeBron James caught 57 passes for 1,160 yards and 16 touchdowns, receiving offers from powerhouses like Notre Dame.

As a hooper, James earned the Ohio Mr. Basketball and Gatorade National Player of the Year awards. He racked up 29.2 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game in his senior season. By this time, James had committed to playing basketball full time.

Instead of attending college with a scholarship, he declared for the draft at age 18. His hometown team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, did not waste time drafting James. He scored 25 points on his debut and never looked back again.

James, in an interview with Cleveland.com, revealed that he grew up watching the Buckeyes, dreaming of wearing their red and white jerseys.

I promise, I say this all the time—if I had one year of college, I would have ended up here [Ohio State Buckeyes]. No matter where I go in the world, no matter where it is, I will always rock Ohio State colors.

The world never got the chance to see James play football professionally. However, he frequents NFL games, especially when it’s a fixture of his beloved Cleveland Browns.
