Megan Keller stole the spotlight on Thursday as she stepped up late and scored a historic overtime winner against Canada that secured the gold medal for Team USA. Dave Portnoy would celebrate this with a 3-word message.
The USA had been on a dominating run this year. They would cruise through the group stage and the playoffs and were undefeated while conceding just one goal in the process.
In the group stage phase, they dismantled Canada 5-0 and were asserted their dominance. The matchup on Thursday marked the 7th time the two countries had taken part in the women’s ice hockey gold medal match against each other.
Like men’s hockey, Canada had the upper hand with 5 gold medal wins compared to 2 of the United States. They seemed to be on their way to a 6th gold medal as they took the lead in the second period through Kristin O’Neill.
The U.S. kept trailing till the final moments of the game. They would even remove their goaltender, Aerin Frankel and put on an extra attacker. Captain Hilary Knight would come up with a clutch goal with around 2 minutes remaining to tie the game.
Keller, who played a part in that goal and got the assist, would then etch her name in American sports history in overtime. In the 3-on-3 period, she would first skate past the defense and tuck the puck into the back of the net for the win and secure the gold medal for her country.

The attention now turns towards the men’s ice hockey action on Friday. Team USA and Canada are both in the semi-finals and will take on Slovakia and Finland, respectively.
If both sides do end up progressing, they will once again battle for gold against each other. It would also be the first meeting between the two North American countries since the 4 Nations Face-Off Championship game last year. Canada ended up winning that game 3-2 through an overtime winner from Connor McDavid at the TD Garden in Boston.
