Dave Portnoy was not happy with the New York Yankees on Thursday. After his beloved team, the Boston Red Sox, lost to the Yankees in the 2025 American League Wild Card Series, he took a swipe at the Yanks for celebrating wildly. He would then get attacked by the fans on social media.

Despite finishing 5 games behind their arch rivals in the AL East standings, the Red Sox had their number. They won 9 out of the 13 games during the regular season against the Yankees.

After Max Fried was removed from Game 1, the Red Sox pounced on the Yankees and won the opening game 3-1. With the season on the line on Wednesday, the Bronx Bombers emerged as 4-3 winners in Game 2 and forced Game 3.

In this game, the reigning American League champions dominated their opponents. Through a strong pitching performance from rookie Cam Schlitter, they ended up as 4-0 winners and knocked out their arch rivals from the playoffs.

As the Yankees progressed through, they would celebrate the win wildly. Portnoy, who is a Red Sox fan, was not happy to see this. In a post on X, he would take a shot at the Yankees for celebrating this Wild Card win.

In another post, he would throw a dig at MLB. The Barstool Sports owner took issue with all 3 games of the Wild Card series taking place at only one field, unlike the best-of-five or best-of-seven series, where both teams get to play at least one game in their home ground.

Also not making excuses but the 3 games at one field in the wild card is such Jv little league bull*** it’s not even funny.

It is obviously not the first time that Portnoy has taken a shot at the Yankees. At the very start of the season, he would drop a two-and-a-half-minute while expressing his frustrations with the team using torpedo-designed bats. He would urge the league to ban the usage of this.

His swipe at the Yankees, however, backfired. Many users on X would hit back at him and trolled him brutally. One user wrote, “Cry about it” while taking a dig at his comment.

The Yankees also scripted history with this win. They became the first team in postseason history to win a Wild Card Series after being 1-0 down in the best-of-three series. Since its introduction in 2022, teams were 15-0 when they won the first game of the series.

Yankees get first playoff win against the Red Sox since 2003 following Wild Card Series win

The historic rivalry between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox got another chapter through this Wild Card series. This playoff win was the Yankees’ first postseason success against their biggest nemesis since 2003.

The two teams faced off in the 2003 American League Championship Series (ALCS). The current Yankees manager, Aaron Boone, would turn out to be the hero for them in Game 7 as he hit a walk-off home run, which sent them to the World Series.

The rivals faced off again next year. After being 3-0 down, the Red Sox produced the biggest comeback in MLB history and won Games 4, 5, 6, and 7 to win the series 4-3. They ended up winning the World Series, something the Yankees failed to do in 2003, to end their 86-year World Championship drought.

They would then face each other in the 2018 American League Division Series (ALDS). The Red Sox beat them 3-1 en route to winning the World Series again.

In 2021, the Yanks suffered a 6-2 loss in the AL Wild Card game. This Wild Card series win marks the first time they have eliminated their rivals from the postseason since that iconic walk-off home run from Boone in 2003.

The Yankees will now turn their attention towards the ALDS matchup against the Toronto Blue Jays. The New York outfit lost the division title to them as they did not hold the tiebreaker. The winners of this matchup will take on the winners of the Seattle Mariners-Detroit Tigers ALDS matchup in the 2025 ALCS.
