Widely known for being the founder of Barstool Sports, Dave Portnoy is also a die-hard Boston Celtics supporter. This implies he is also a fan of Celtics star Jayson Tatum, who is currently at the Paris Olympics with Team USA. While Tatum has a solid reputation in the NBA, he has found playing minutes hard to come by under Steve Kerr.
That is something Portnoy has taken an issue with. Recently, he took to his socials to make public his intentions to support France against the USA. According to him, this is because of the treatment Tatum has received from Kerr so far. However, former NBA star Patrick Beverley seems to have a different view regarding the decisions of the USA head coach. Beverley decided to school Dave Portnoy about this on X.
In the opinion of Beverley, who spent 12 seasons in the NBA before moving to Europe, Kerr is the right man for Team USA and his coaching decisions are drawn from many years of experience. Also, he asserts Kerr has achieved a lot more as a player than Tatum and has done the same as a coach in the league. Furthermore, Beverley stated that the data is there for Dave Portnoy to see and then reiterated that they do not lie, unlike humans.
Steve Kerr. 5x NBA Champion as player, 4x NBA Champion as coach, Gold medal coaching in 2020, 3 pt champ in NBA, NBA coach of the year, Men Lie, Woman Lie, Numbers DONT.Patrick Beverley wrote on X
With the Celtics star playing just two out of five games at the 2024 Olympics, lots of people have criticized the head coach for his decision not to give enough minutes to the NBA champion. Nonetheless, the USA has progressed to the finale of the basketball competition where they will face France, without Tatum playing regularly. It is worth noting that he did get some decent minutes in the gold medal match that they eventually won.
Top analyst berates Steve Kerr after Jayson Tatum was given zero minutes against Serbia
With the USA men’s basketball team full of established and famous superstars, trying to play everyone won’t be possible. Nevertheless, leaving Jayson Tatum on the bench throughout their Olympics opener with Serbia was enough to ring alarm bells. And alarming enough for fans and top analysts like Stephen A. Smith to lash angrily at Steve Kerr.
The renowned analyst had taken to his show to talk about Tatum’s omission from the game after the USA had won against the Serbian team. Speaking about the zero minutes given to the 26-year-old, an angry Smith went on a rant.
The reigning, defending, NBA champion Jayson Tatum. And you can't find minutes in a 26-point lopsided victory... I'm trying to get away from cussing. But Steve Kerr that’s some straight bullsh*t.Stephen A. Smith said
Despite Smith taking it all out on Kerr from day 1, the Celtics player’s fortunes with the team did not improve. Instead, he sat out the second game against the Serbians once again, this time in the semifinals, as Team USA managed to win by a close margin.
