It may have been lost in the annals of social media lore, but LeBron James’ Los Angeles sojourn was not something that many Lakers fans wanted. After his 2018 playoff run, he left no doubt about his ability to lead any franchise to the Promised Land. But his looming departure from Cleveland also had some Lakers faithful questioning the ways in which his arrival would impact the team’s fortunes and the roster building.
At that point, the Lakers were on the upturn following a lean period in Kobe Bryant’s final Lakers years. They had drafted Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart, Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma and Julius Randle – all of whom are valued NBA players in various roles across the league. But all five of these players were sacrificed at the altar at some point in the past seven seasons as the Lakers sought to maximize the James title window.
Losing their homegrown players was a gut punch for the aforementioned faction within the Lakers, and for many, their bubble championship win with LeBron James and Anthony Davis leading the charge was not enough of a payoff for the mediocrity, heartbreaks and drama that came with James going to Hollywood. Over the past four seasons and change, the Lakers have mostly been in the news for flukey reasons.
Barstool Sports CEO and President Dave Portnoy is one of the most well-known LeBron James haters in the media space. He recently vented and spoke his mind on how James’ Los Angeles tenure has not paid off in many ways for Lakers fans, who are used to higher standards from their franchise legends:
Lebron James is one of the greatest losers in the history of the Lakers organization. He literally hasnt won anything, that bubble saved his life. His Lakers teams havent been a threat to do anything, hes been a total bum, a total failure, hes ruined the franchise, he forced then at gunpoint to draft their kid, for him to be like “im mad”, all they’ve tried to do is accomodate him and they’ve made a mockery out of a once proud franchise
Dave Portnoy DESTROYS Lebron 🔥🔥

LeBron James could be playing his final NBA season in 2025-26 according to some reporters
It’s no secret that Father Time has been extending its victorious run by now slowing LeBron James down over the past six seasons or so. James was an amazing two-way force in the NBA bubble, but his athleticism in Los Angeles is not at the level that it was in Cleveland, right from the beginning. Now 40 years old going on 41, James’ watch is nearing its end.

Lakers insider Dave McMenamin reported on this development recently:
I think we have to start thinking about (how) this could be his last year in the league… Rich Paul told me there was no extension talk ‘cuz we didn’t ask for the extension. We didn’t broach the subject.
LeBron James is slated to earn $52.6 million this year, which would make him the 13th-highest paid player in the league. The 21-time All-Star has added as many feathers in his cap as any NBA player that could ever be compared to him. He has fulfilled his dream of playing with his son Bronny James. It’s time for a curtain call most likely.
