Mariners TV announcer Dave Sims succeeds New York Yankees legendary voice John Sterling as the play-by-play broadcaster for the games. Following Sterling’s retirement, many questioned who would fulfill Sterling’s role and fans got their answer.
During the recruitment process, Sims and Rickie Ricardo were named as the finalists for the position, but WFAN went with Sims. Audacy’s New York market president Chris Oliviero believed Sims would be a “worthy successor” to live up to the Yankees lineage.
Yankees radio voice has always been a role occupied by legendary figures like Mel Allen, Red Barber, Phil Rizzuto, to John Sterling. To be named as the next in line, Sims seemed excited and honored to accept the position.

The Opening Day will mark the debut of Dave Sims in the Bronx. He’ll work alongside Suzyn Waldman in the booth. John Sterling, NY Yankees legendary voice, retired early this season in April after 35 years.
However, he came out of retirement to call the last six regular season games and the postseason games. After the World Series, he announced that he has no plans to return further in 2025. Sterling was forced to retire due to fatigue and undisclosed health concerns.
After missing quite a few Yankees games he admitted that he was feeling “really tired” and could not muster up the energy of his past years. However, John Sterling may return to the booth for a once-a-week talk show, although nothing is yet confirmed.
Social media reacts to Dave Sims’ new play-by-play role as Yankees announcer
Dave Sims has quite a resume on his hands before joining the New York Yankees at the Bronx. He won the Emmy Award two times, and three Washington Sportscaster of the Year Awards from the National Sports Media Association.
Fans are happy to have Dave Sims as the new broadcaster. Although John Sterling’s space can never be filled, Sims will be a good successor to the role.
One X user noted, “Very interesting listening to Dave and Boomer,” another said, “He’s gonna be ELECTRIC on the mic.” Check other fan reactions below:

Incredible hire; one of the best voices in the game. Wouldn’t shock us if this turns to be their biggest off-season acquisition….

John Sterling’s retirement came out of the blue for many. Then again when he rejoined the booth every fan in the Bronx celebrated. However, with Game 5 of the World Series an era ended in the booth. The role will now be handed down to Dave Sims who will be contracted with the Yankees for a long time.
