David De Gea and Dean Henderson to share goalkeeping duties for Manchester United for the rest of the season
Henderson and David De Gea will fight it out for the starting goalkeeping spot for United for the rest of the season
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a good headache in Manchester United’s goal-keeping position as both David De Gea and Dean Henderson are worthy holders of the No.1 position at the club. The manager has decided to remain fair in his judgement and will play both of them for the rest of the season.
David De Gea has been Manchester United’s hero a number of times throughout the past seasons but his recent frailties in goal has put his automatic selection under scrutiny. Dean Henderson has been in terrific form since his loan spell and Sheffield United and has continued to shine this season.
David De Gea has recently lost out on the No. 1 position in Spain’s national team under Luis Enrique after a string of disappointing performances
Henderson has been mainly used as cup goalkeeper since returning to the club in the summer but started the last six matches after De Gea returned to Spain for the birth of his first child. De Gea on the other hand has also missed out his No.1 position in Spain as Luis Enrique has entrusted Unai Simon over the experienced keeper in the past few weeks.
Both are in contention for Brighton’s visit to Old Trafford but Solskjaer gave little away about who will be between the sticks.
“I have the great option of two top goalkeepers,” said the United boss. “It’s a pleasure to have them around here.“
“We hopefully have nine plus five games to go – we want to go all the way in the Europa League as well. I’m sure you’ll see both of them playing in goal for us.”
Asked if he has a decision to make this summer with both Man Utd goalkeepers seeing themselves as worthy first-choices, Solskjaer said: “Well, I understand the question and the narrative in the media.
“There’s always where there’s tension or where there can be potential tension or controversy, that’s where everyone wants to hear a comment from me.”
“What I can say is what I’ve said so many times, I’ve got great options playing the two of them. Top keepers but of course both of them want to play as much as possible and that will be decided on merit. That will be who do we think going to give us a win on any given day.”
It will be interesting to see who Solskjaer ultimately gives the nod to in goal when United take on Brighton on Sunday.
