Ever since his comeback to top-flight football, David de Gea has been making the news for all the right reasons. One of the latest additions to his already incredible set of rousing performances since his comeback came against the Italian giants, AC Milan.

De Gea joined La Viola on a one-year contract after being a free agent for the entirety of last season. He saved two penalties in a single game to deny the Rossoneri a victory over Fiorentina. In doing so, he also became the first goalkeeper to save two spot-kicks in a single Serie A match in the last nine seasons.

Milan and La Viola locked horns with both teams looking to improve their positions in the points table after a shaky start to the season. Just before half-time, Milan won a penalty after Tijjani Reijnders was fouled by Fiorentina captain, Luca Ranieri. Theo Hernandez stepped up for Milan but failed to find the back of the net as David de Gea came up with a robust dive to deny the Frenchman.

Early in the second half, the Rossoneri were awarded a second penalty. This time, former Chelsea star Tammy Abraham stepped up to take the penalty. However, De Gea stood tall between Abraham and the back of the net, denying AC Milan the equalizer.

Earlier, Fiorentina got the first penalty of the game when Theo Hernandez, who was later given the marching orders, clipped Dodo. However, Moise Kean failed to convert the penalty. Later, Yacine Adil scored the opener for La Viola.

Christian Pulisic restored parity for Milan in the 60th minute but their joy was shortlived as Albert Gudmundsson once again put Fiorentina in the lead, which they managed to keep to take home all three points.

A look at Fiorentina’s recent run across all competitions

Fiorentina has been savoring an unbeaten run for the last four matches. With the win over AC Milan, they climbed up to the 11th in the Serie A points table. Despite boasting of a resolute defence, their attackers haven’t been as clinical this season as they were expected.

When they returned to league action, they had a bumpy outing against AC Milan in a match that saw three missed penalties and a red card. However, they managed to take home all three points in the end.
