Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal and rising star Carlos Alcaraz have joined hands for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The pair will be representing the country in men’s doubles events and considering their stature and records, expectations are high. Team captain David Ferrer has also admitted to the same.
Ferrer has agreed that fans and the team also have high expectations from Nadal and Alcaraz. He stated that both players were having a great time together and expected them to have a good understanding on the court.
Rafa and Carlos generate a lot of expectation, but we already knew that and it is logical. It is difficult for us to even go to dinner! It is the Games and I, as captain, am excited to see them together. The important thing is that they get to know each other. Now, they meet and live together for a long time...They feed off each other. I think that it will be very good for them to have that complicity.David Ferrer said (via AS)
However, the Spanish captain also pointed out that it wouldn’t be a surprise for him if they did better in singles than in doubles because they had not played enough matches in doubles.
David Ferrer outlines the challenges for Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz
David Ferrer also outlined the challenges Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz may face at the Paris Olympics. While the Spanish captain does not worry about their performances in the singles, he is not expecting the pair to excel in the doubles.
Ferrer pointed to their lack of time on the court together and admitted that he wouldn’t be surprised if the duo failed to win a medal.
They've played very little doubles together. Carlos hasn't played for years, in fact, and Rafa hasn't played much either, even though he has more experience. There are couples who have been playing together all their lives and that's very noticeable. It could work out well, but if they don't do as well as they did in singles, I wouldn't be surprised either.David Ferrer opined (via AS)
Notably, while Nadal already has a gold medal to his name in the men’s doubles event, his partner Alcaraz is new to the category. The 21-year-old has played only six doubles matches so far in his career.
